[Weather] NWS Boston 11/18 Morning Briefing: Coastal Storm Impacts Today

Good morning everyone,
We are still expecting light ice accretions resulting in slick untreated
roads for areas west and northwest of the Boston to Providence corridor.
Increasing northeast winds resulting in minor wind damage impact for Cape
Cod and the Islands, and a period of minor coastal flooding for the
afternoon high tide in eastern MA also remain expected.
Wind and Coastal Flood Advisories were unchanged with this update. While
the Winter Weather Advisory for light icing was unchanged - it was extended
into the pre-dawn hours Tuesday for the eastern slopes of the Berkshires,
as cold rain changes back to wet snow and sleet tonight with continued
wintry weather impacts for these locations.
*Changes from Sunday's briefings: *
- *Winter Weather Advisory Extended In Time [*Now Ends 6 AM Tuesday]:
For the eastern slopes of the Berkshires - western Franklin and western
Hampshire Counties in MA.
- Storm total ice amounts reduced, but similar impact anticipated.
Details below:
*Interior Light Icing:*
*Locations*: West/northwest of the Boston to Providence corridor.
*Timing:* Spotty freezing drizzle and/or very light freezing rain
developing around daybreak. Changeover to rain anticipated in most areas
later in the morning.
*Amounts*: Trace amounts to a couple hundredths of ice in the Winter
Weather Advisory area - resulting in a light, thin glaze of ice.
*Impact*: Slick roads impacting this morning's commute.
*Confidence:* High. Coverage of freezing drizzle and light freezing rain
will be spotty/patchy.
*Changeover to Wet Snow Tonight:*
*Locations*: Mainly the eastern slopes of the Berkshires, but also into the
northern Worcester hills.
*Timing:* Before midnight tonight into early Tuesday morning.
*Amounts*: Up to an inch of combined snow/sleet accumulation, with
additional trace ice amounts.
*Impact*: Slick roads, mainly at elevation.
*Confidence:* High. Any light freezing rain/freezing drizzle to be brief.
*Strong Winds:*
*Locations*: Dukes and Nantucket Counties into Block Island, and Cape Cod.
*Timing:* 6 AM Monday through early Monday evening.
*Sustained Wind:* NE 25 to 35 mph.
*Wind Gusts:* NE 35 to 45 mph with a few gusts up to 50 mph possible.
*Impact*: Minor damage such as downed tree limbs. Perhaps Isolated power
outages.
*Confidence:* High.
*Marine Impacts:*
*Locations*: Massachusetts and Rhode Island coastal waters
*Timing:* Tonight and Monday
*Wind Gusts:* NE 35 to 45 kt.
*Seas:* 4 to 9 ft on the inner bays and sounds; 13 to 17 ft offshore.
*Confidence:* High.
*Minor Coastal Flooding:*
*Locations*: Eastern Massachusetts coast
*Timing:* Monday afternoon high tide (3:10 PM at Boston and 4:17 PM on
Nantucket)
*Storm Surge:* 1.5 to 2.0 feet
*Inundation:* Less than 1 foot above ground level
*Impact*: Some vulnerable shoreline roads may become temporarily impassable
around high tide. Minor beach erosion is also possible.
*Confidence:* High. Overall minor impacts likely as storm storm will remain
below 2.0 feet.
Updated storm total snow and ice, maximum wind gust and maximum wave height
graphics are attached, as well as an overview of active hazards.
