Good afternoon,
Following is an update regarding excessive rain forecast for late in the
day Sunday, lasting into early Tuesday morning. There have been several
changes with this afternoon's forecast.
A Flood Watch has now been issued for CT and western and central MA. The
Watch start and end times are:
- *Southern CT: *Sunday evening through Monday Afternoon
- *Litchfield County in CT: * Sunday Afternoon through Monday Evening
- *Hartford, Tolland and Windham Counties in CT: *Sunday Evening through
Tuesday Morning
- *Berkshire County in MA: * Sunday Afternoon through Monday Evening
- *Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Worcester and Northern Middlesex County
in MA: *Sunday Evening through Tuesday Morning.
Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall are
anticipated Sunday into Monday night. The focus for heaviest rains Sunday
into Sunday night is in interior western New England, generally from
Worcester westward. Heavy rains then spread eastward Monday into Monday
evening across much of Southern New England. *The Flood Watch may need to
be expanded eastward into remaining portions of MA and RI in later updates*
.
The risk for excessive rains capable of localized flash flooding continues
to increase. The Weather Prediction Center has included portions of
interior Southern New England in a Moderate Risk for excessive rain. This
level of excessive rain risk is uncommon for Southern New England, and
speaks to the potential for heavy rain capable of flash flooding.
Rises on larger rivers and smaller creeks and streams are expected to occur
during and after cessation of heavy rains. While there are no rivers
forecast to reach into flood stage, our partners at the Northeast River
Forecast Center are monitoring river levels in interior Southern New
England, particularly the Connecticut River basin. This is highlighted in
the Significant River Flood Outlook, which is attached.
Attached supporting graphics include the following:
- One-page briefing.
- A map which shows the Flood Watch area.
- Forecast storm total rainfall (note: locally higher amounts are
possible).
- Excessive Rain Outlooks for Sunday and Monday from the Weather
Prediction Center, highlighting the risk for excessive rains.
- 5-Day Significant River Flood Outlook from the Northeast River
Forecast Center, bringing awareness that river levels exceeding flood stage
are possible in the yellow-highlighted area on the graphic.
Expect the next briefing to be sent by 600 am Sunday.
Thank You!
Meteorologists: Andrew Loconto, Bill Leatham and Kyle Pederson
