Though the precipitation type is expected to remain rain for the Hudson Valley, a wintry mix including snow, sleet and some freezing rain is possible elsewhere. The best chance for some icing due to freezing rain will be in the Mohawk Valley, southern Adirondacks, Glens Falls/Lake George region, and southern Vermont. The Winter Weather Advisory in the Adirondacks, western Mohawk Valley and Upper Hudson Valley and southern VT will remain in effect until 10AM. We have allowed the Winter Weather Advisory in the Capital District and northern portions of the mid-Hudson Valley and Litchfield County, CT to expire at 7AM. See the attached maps for details. As temperatures continue to rise above freezing, precipitation will change to plain rain by 10 am across the entire region. Slippery travel will continue this morning, mainly for northern areas. Behind this storm, gusty west to northwest winds are possible on Saturday. These gusty winds in excess of 35 mph may result in down trees and tree limbs, which may cause power outages. Precipitation will begin between 1 am and 3 am across eastern New York and western New England, as a wintry mix of snow and sleet that will quickly change to freezing rain. As temperatures continue to rise above freezing, precipitation will change to plain rain between 4 am and 10 am Friday. A light accumulation of snow and ice is expected and this will lead to slippery travel on untreated surfaces, which may impact the morning commute in some areas. Isolated power outages are possible over portions of the southern Adirondacks, Lake George Saratoga region, and southern Vermont, where up to 0.2" of ice accretion is possible along with winds gusting to 35 mph. Precipitation will begin around midnight and initially be snow and sleet, but will quickly change to freezing rain during the late night hours. As temperatures continue to rise, precipitation will change to plain rain between 4 AM and 10 AM on Friday with the Adirondacks and southern Vermont taking the longest to changeover to plain rain. Across the entire area, snow and sleet accumulation will be an inch or less, along with a light glaze of ice. A few have already exceeded flood stage and we have issued flood warnings for those river points. Our Flood Watch remain in effect for this region until 1AM tonight. Eastern NY and western New England will stay mild tonight but we are closely monitoring an area of showers and thunderstorms in western NY and PA that may move into our region overnight. Any thunderstorm will be capable of producing heavy downpours which may lead to localized poor drainage or urbanized flooding. The rainfall coupled with some snow melt in the higher terrain is expected to produce some minor river flooding and urban/poor drainage flooding. A Flood Watch remains in effect for all of eastern New York and western New England. Current forecast rainfall totals are in the 1 to 3 inch range with locally higher amounts over higher terrain south and east of the Capital District. In addition, strong east to southeast gusty winds are also expected over the higher terrain of eastern New York and western New England, especially above 2000 feet elevation.
