Below is an updated weather briefing for a wind event that will impact coastal Cape Ann and Northern Berkshire County late tonight into Thursday morning. We also expect strong winds to develop across Cape Cod and the Islands late Thursday morning and continue through the afternoon. Details are below: *Headlines...**Wind Advisory is in effect* for eastern Essex County from 3 AM until 9 AM Thursday morning. *What...*East winds from 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. *Where...*Coastal Essex County/Cape Ann region. *When...*During the early and mid morning hours on Thursday. *Impacts...*There will be a period of strong winds and wind gusts early Thursday morning, upwards to 45 to 50 mph at times across the advisory area. A few power outages are also possible. *Additional Information*...There may be some higher gusts across portions of central and western Massachusetts into north central Connecticut during the overnight and early morning hours on Thursday, as well as along the remaining coastline. Good morning, Based on our morning forecast, the following is an update to the expected light wintry weather event today, bringing some slippery travel impacts mainly to elevations near and above 1000 ft. *Changes from Prior Briefing:* *Winter Weather Advisory for the eastern slopes of the Berkshires. In effect from 10 AM until 5 PM today. * *Details:* *What ... *A brief period of snow or sleet to light freezing rain, before changing over to all rain. *Where ...* Primarily the eastern slopes of the Berkshires; lesser snow & ice accumulation also possible into the Worcester Hills. *Timing ...* Starting as snow around mid-to-late-morning today; sleet and freezing rain early this afternoon, ending as rain into mid to late this afternoon. *Impacts ...* Untreated surfaces near and above 1000 ft will become slick from light icing and snow. Wet roads expected elsewhere. *Forecast Confidence ...* High confidence in a short-duration wintry weather event, with a light snow accumulation (coating to 2") and minor icing (trace to less than a tenth of an inch) at elevations near and above 1000 ft. All, *Not* a major or widespread winter weather event Tuesday but some impacts in the form of slippery travel across the Worcester Hills and east slopes of the Berkshires from late morning into the afternoon, especially the highest elevations in these areas. Additional details below. *What ... *A brief period of snow or sleet to light freezing rain before changing over to all rain *Where ...* the Worcester Hills and the east slopes of the Berkshires especially the highest elevations of these areas *When ...* Late Tuesday morning into the afternoon *Impacts ...* a 3 to 6 hour period of snow or sleet to light freezing rain will result in slippery travel especially on untreated surfaces. By 4 or 5 pm, all areas should have changed over to plain rain with temperatures above freezing. So other than possibly a very brief period of snow and/or sleet at the start, rain will be the predominant precipitation type for the cities and suburbs of Boston, Providence and Hartford. Temperatures will be above freezing across these areas so roadways will just be wet. *Forecast Confidence ...* high confidence in a short duration wintry event (3-6 hours) with minor snow accumulations (a coating to 2 inches) and very minor ice accretions (less than 0.05 inches) across western and central Massachusetts. This includes the Worcester Hills and the east slopes of the Berkshires. There is still some uncertainty that impacts could be felt as far south into northwest Hartford county. However, confidence is low at this time. *Attached Graphics ...* - A loop beginning at Tuesday 8 am and ending at 7 pm showing an approximate timeline and precipitation types of snow (blue), a wintry mix (purple) and freezing rain (red) moving across the region tomorrow/Tuesday - Expected snow totals. Good afternoon everyone No significant changes were made to the previous forecast. We have attached a few images showing the expected start time of the snow as well as the accumulations. An outline follows in the email below. *WHAT/WHERE/WHEN:* - Snow develops from west to east between 11 PM and 2 AM Thursday. - Areas south of the Massachusetts Turnpike will change to mainly rain by 5-6 AM and to the New Hampshire border by 7-8 AM. A brief period of sleet may occur during the transition. - Pockets of light freezing rain may persist until 9 or 10 AM, but mainly confined to the higher terrain of the Worcester Hills and Berkshires. *POTENTIAL IMPACTS/ACCUMULATIONS:* *- *Snow will only last a few hours in most locations, but may fall moderate to heavy for a very short time. Therefore, roads may quickly become snow covered along with reduced visibility. - A quick 1 to 2 inches of snow are possible for most of the region away from the south coast and Cape Cod. A swath of 2-5 inches of snow is possible from near Route 2 in Massachusetts to the New Hampshire border. -* The greatest impacts to the Thursday morning rush hour are expected north of the Massachusetts Turnpike and especially north of Route 2. There is where snow will still be falling at 5 or 6 AM. * *- *Up to one tenth of an inch of ice accretion will be possible mainly across the higher elevations of the Worcester Hills and Berkshires. Good morning everyone, We continue to forecast a wintry mix that will impact parts of our region during part of the Thursday morning commute. This will not be a big storm, but given the timing there will be some impacts mainly northwest of a Boston to Providence to Hartford line. Not much has changed with our forecast for this storm, but a *Winter Weather Advisory* has been issued from *11 PM this evening through 9 am Thursday (continues through noon Thursday for northern Massachusetts).* *WHAT/WHERE:* - Ptype may begin as a brief period of snow/sleet near the Boston to Providence to Hartford corridor, but a quick change to rain should occur with any impact being rather limited. Any snow/sleet accums should be less than an inch. - Further northwest into the Hills of northern CT, as well as southwest and south central MA a coating to 2 inches of snow and sleet is expected. A period of light freezing rain may follow with up to one tenth of an inch of ice accretion possible mainly in the high terrain. - Greatest impact is expected across far northern MA, especially near the NH border where 2 to 4 inches of snow is possible with isolated 5 to 6 inch amounts not out of the question in extreme northwest MA. Light ice accretion up to one tenth of an inch may follow. *WHEN:* *-* Precipitation overspreads the region between 11 PM and 3 AM Thursday from west to east. Any snow/sleet will then change to rain near the Boston to Providence to Hartford corridor. - Further northwest the threat for accumulating snow will be through 6 or 7 AM Thursday, before precipitation changes to sleet,freezing rain and rain. Brief 1 inch per snowfall rates possible north of Route 2 in far northern MA through 7 AM Thursday. - Light ice accretion may follow through mid morning Thursday, mainly in the higher terrain with up to one tenth of an inch of ice accretion possible. Elsewhere, mainly rain is expected after 7 or 8 AM Thursday. - Ideally locations should have changed to rain by Thursday afternoon with temps above freezing, however there remains some uncertainty whether things will ever chance to rain along the New Hampshire border. *POTENTIAL IMPACTS:* *- *The main concern is northwest of the Boston to Providence to Hartford corridor, where a wintry mix will impact part of the Thursday AM commute. Any snow/sleet accums should be a coating to 2 inches, but some light ice accretion may follow especially in the high terrain. - Greatest risk for a plowable snowfall will be north of Route 2 in Massachusetts, where 2 to 4 inches of snow may accumulate and perhaps isolated 5 to 6 inch amounts in extreme northwest Massachusetts. -* The greatest impacts will likely be across far northern Massachusetts where a plowable is possible. Clarification of NWS-Norton DSS Support; offer for training

Dear MA School Superintendents, Earlier this afternoon, you received an email from me regarding our Decision Support Services (DSS) for emergency managers. The reason that you received this email is because you are also on our distribution list for heads-up weather Powerpoints (you probably just received one about a little wintry weather coming up). I wanted to clarify that our DSS event support is limited to town emergency manager requests. Unfortunately, we cannot provide specialized forecasts for individual school districts (hundreds in our forecast region) for sporting events, graduations, etc. That said, however, I would love to offer some training -- at a meeting with all superintendents or regional meetings -- to show you where on our website to glean pertinent, critical information, both in advance of and during your events. For example, I could demonstrate our point-and-click forecast, the hourly weather graph chart, our forecaster discussions, the NWS radar loop, the Storm Prediction Center's severe weather outlook, snowfall forecasts, etc. Paul/Scott, please let me know if this is feasible to work into one of your training sessions.
