Here is the latest update for snowfall tonight into Thursday . - *Advisory Expansion: *All of southeast Massachusetts most of Rhode Island except Block Island, northeast Connecticut, western Franklin & Hampshire counties, Worcester County. The advisory is cancelled for Nantucket as warmer ocean air changes rain to snow at times. - *Expected Accumulation:* Total snowfall of *2–4 inches* is anticipated in the advisory area. - *Peak Timing:* Bulk of the widespread steady snow *1 AM and 6 AM. A separate round *of snow showers and *heavier snow squalls* possible between* 6 AM and 10 AM Thursday.* - *Heavy Bursts:* Snowfall rates could briefly reach *1 inch per hour* across southern RI and southeast MA, potentially reducing visibility. Another burst of heavy snow associated with snow squalls quickly moves from W-E Thursday morning but these may be more localized. - *Road Conditions:* Given cold temperatures roads will be snow covered and slippery. - *Holiday Impact:* The timing coincides with *New Year’s Eve celebrations* ending, increasing risks for those traveling late tonight and early Thursday morning. - Attached is a map highlighting the expected snowfall amounts. Good afternoon, we’ve issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, in effect Wednesday evening through early Thursday morning. This is not expected to be a major winter storm, but 2–4 inches of snow is likely on the islands. Periods of steadier snow are possible overnight, with the greatest concern between 1 AM and 6 AM, when brief heavier bursts could reduce visibility and quickly create slick road conditions. The timing is less than ideal, as this may coincide with New Year’s celebrations wrapping up, increasing the risk for hazardous travel late tomorrow tonight and early Thursday. Good morning everyone... A High Wind Watch has been issued for western and central Massachusetts tonight into Tuesday night. An extended period of westerly wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph with the strongest of those winds favored across western and central Massachusetts. There still remains some uncertainty on the exact magnitude of the winds...but additional Wind Advisories and/or High Wind Warnings will likely be needed for much of southern New England. The other issue will be Wind Chills dropping into the single digits and teens tonight through Tuesday night. Lastly...temperatures near freezing very early this morning northwest of I-95 were still resulting in some icing on untreated roads and walkways. Temperatures will continue to rise and the Winter Weather Advisory should be allowed to expire on time at 6 am for the rest of interior southern New England. A few of the typical low-lying spots may have localized icing last into mid-morning...but again that threat would be very localized. Good afternoon, Following is an update on a freezing rain event expected to affect Southern New England tonight into early on Monday. *Changes Since Last Briefing*: Winter Weather Advisory expanded to include all of Rhode Island (except Block Island) as well as Bristol and western Plymouth Counties in Massachusetts. Icy roads, bridges/overpasses and sidewalks will be the main hazard tonight into early Monday, with impacts to the Monday morning commute. The potential for tree and powerline damage will also exist in portions of the CT River and Merrimack Valleys, where ice accumulations look to be more significant (up to a quarter-inch). We've attached an updated one-page briefing, along with updated forecast icing accumulations and updated winter weather advisory areas. Finally, we do want to mention that we are expecting a period of strong west wind gusts to develop Monday night and continuing into Tuesday, which could hamper recovery and restoration efforts. We have included a graphic of forecast wind gusts within this e-mail briefing for your planning and awareness, which show wind gusts in the 35-50 mph range. We would then issue a separate e-mail briefing if wind gusts were to rise to the level of needing wind headlines. Good Morning. Confidence continues to grow in a period of freezing rain tonight, moving into southern New England between 7-10pm, and changing over to rain from south to north between midnight and 4am. Ice accretion will be highest in the northern CT river valley with up to a quarter inch of ice is possible. Elsewhere, we are generally expecting anywhere from a trace to a tenth of an inch of ice. A Winter Weather Advisory has been expanded to include the Northshore, Boston, and western Kent County RI. There is still uncertainty on if temperatures will be sub-freezing around the south shore tonight when precip arrives. Advisories could be expanded south this afternoon if confidence in freezing rain increases today. Icy roads and sidewalks will be the main hazard, with impacts to the Monday morning commute possible. However the potential for tree and powerline damage will also exist in portions of the CT River and Merrimack Valleys, where ice accretions look to be more significant and coinciding with where leftover snow from the recent snowstorm is still clinging to trees and powerlines. Icy roads and sidewalks will be the main hazard, with impacts to the Monday morning commute. However the potential for tree and powerline damage will also exist in portions of the CT River and Merrimack Valleys, where ice accretions look to be more significant and coinciding with where leftover snow from the recent snowstorm is still clinging to trees and powerlines. A Winter Weather Advisory has been posted for a large part of interior Southern New England where confidence is greatest in icing accumulations. This may need to be expanded eastward into the Boston to Providence corridor in later updates. Good afternoon, Please find attached a one-page briefing with the latest update on the clipper system forecast to bring accumulating snow to most of southern New England tonight into tomorrow morning. *Current Confidence* We have moderate to high confidence in the following snowfall totals: - 4–8 inches across western MA/CT - 3–6 inches for central MA, eastern CT, and southern Rhode Island (RI). Confidence is lower across east/southeast MA, but 2–4 inches of accumulating snow is expected in those locations as well. Ocean effect enhancements may boost snow totals up to 4-6" for portions of The South Shore in MA, but confidence in where these enhancements will occur is low. *What Has Changed* - A *Winter Storm Warning* has been issued for western Hampden County in MA and Hartford County in CT. - *Winter Weather Advisories* have been expanded eastward to include Providence County in RI and Bristol and Plymouth Counties in MA. *Timing* The timing remains unchanged: - Snow moves into western MA/CT between 7:00 PM–9:00 PM. - Snow reaches eastern MA between 10:00 PM–midnight. - Snow ends between 4:00 AM–7:00 AM tomorrow morning, with lingering flurries until mid-morning over the east coast. *Post-Event Outlook* Drier conditions are expected late Saturday into Sunday.* We wanted to raise awareness of another system that may bring a threat of freezing rain late Sunday evening into early Monday morning, mainly across interior southern New England.* The attached image highlights the areas with the greatest potential for freezing rain.
