Good afternoon, all: Here is our latest briefing regarding the impacts of Hurricane Erin: Hurricane Erin has passed by our region earlier today but some fringe effects will still be felt across coastal areas of southern New England: High Surf and Rip Currents - High Surf Advisories are in effect into Saturday for most of the MA and RI coastline. - Focus is shifting from the beaches with south-facing exposures to those with an east-facing exposure tonight into Saturday. - Waves continue to diminish Sunday, but still expect at least a moderate risk for rip currents. - Water temperatures remain warm and some beachgoers may flock to the waters, which could put more people at risk. - Keep in mind that many beaches no longer have lifeguards for this season - Anyone going to view the surf should stay at a safe distance and off jetties or piers. - The risk for rip currents is expected to finally end for Monday. Significant Beach Erosion - Swell from Erin should result in dune and beach erosion on east-facing shores this weekend. - Again the focus is shifting away from south-facing beaches. Hazardous Marine Conditions on the Coastal Waters - Small Craft Advisories in effect for RI and MA coastal waters, except for Boston Harbor, Buzzards Bay and Narragansett Bay. - Winds are not much of a concern, it will take some time for rough seas to subside. Minor Coastal Flooding - Coastal Flood Advisories are in effect for Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket for the high tides late tonight, and for Narragansett Bay and south coastal MA/RI for the high tides this evening. - Minor coastal flooding is expected in vulnerable sections of Nantucket Harbor, Edgartown Harbor, Vineyard Haven, and Oak Bluffs this evening with a storm surge of 1 to 2 feet and waves up to 8 feet on Nantucket Sound. Low-end Moderate flooding is possible near Nantucket Harbor if we see a storm surge closer to 2 feet. - Minor coastal flooding is expected in low lying areas around Narragansett Bay and the South Coast around high tide this evening with a storm surge of 1 to 2 feet. - No significant coastal flooding is expected along the E MA coast, but water levels could reach Action stage during high tides tonight. This is expected to be our final briefing, unless there is a significant change to the forecast. Significant Beach Erosion - Swell from Erin should result in dune and beach erosion on south facing shores late this week, especially on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, as well as South County, RI which have had significant erosion over the past few winters from nor’easters. Hazardous Marine Conditions on the Coastal Waters - Gale Warnings are in effect for most MA and RI coastal waters through Friday. - Gale force NE winds could gust as high as 40 kt on the waters near Cape Cod and Nantucket Friday into Saturday with seas of 15-20 feet offshore. - Small Craft Advisories in effect for Boston Harbor, Massachusetts Bay and Narragansett Bay. Minor Coastal Flooding - For Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket: - Minor coastal flooding (up to one foot deep) is expected in more vulnerable low lying areas near Nantucket Harbor, Edgartown Harbor, Oak Bluffs, and possibly Vineyard Haven around high tide late tonight and again late Friday evening. - Rough seas up to 8 feet on Nantucket Sound could also bring debris onto coastal roadways such as Seaview Avenue in Oak Bluffs near the seawall. - These seas just outside of Nantucket Harbor could also bring some deeper flooding (1 to 3 feet deep) to some of the lowest lying areas. - For South Coastal Rhode Island (including Narragansett Bay) and Massachusetts: - Minor coastal flooding (up to one foot deep) is expected in more vulnerable low lying areas around high tide Friday morning and again Friday evening. Large breaking waves of 15-20 feet could bring debris onto coastal roadways around high tide. Low-end Moderate flooding is possible near Nantucket Harbor if we see a storm surge closer to 2 feet. - Elsewhere, no significant coastal flooding is expected, but water levels could reach Action stages along both coasts. Good morning, We want to provide a quick heads-up that most of southern New England is under a *marginal risk for severe thunderstorms* this afternoon. Any thunderstorms that develop will have the potential to produce strong downdrafts, which could result in damaging wind gusts at the surface.* In addition to the isolated severe thunderstorm threat, there is also a risk for urban and poor-drainage flash flooding*, as any storms that develop today are expected to produce heavy downpours. NWS Boston: EM Briefing: Above Normal Temperatures & Extended Dry Weather

All, Just wanted to provide a quick update to our email yesterday about the expected weather next week. Overall there are no big changes to our forecast. There is high confidence for temperatures to be above normal, with many locations for much of next week seeing highs reaching into the lower 90s. Combined with minimal chances for significant rainfall, this could result in rapid onset drought conditions with potential impacts to agriculture, water resources, and potentially an increased risk of brushfire activity. Humidity levels will be slow to increase, so at this point in time it does not appear we will see "Heat Index"/"Feels Like Temperatures" much above the actual high temperatures. Thus we are not expecting another round of the extreme heat as we've experienced several times this summer. Lastly, a reminder that we are entering the time of the year that tropical activity increases in the Atlantic. Although there are areas being watched, at this point there is no indication of anything that will impact the region in the next week.
