Good morning, Following is an update on a complicated storm system that is expected to bring a wintry mix to interior Southern New England starting Sunday night. While much of this wintry weather event will be mainly Sunday night thru Monday night, a continuation of wintry weather accumulations is possible in parts of northern and northwest MA into Tuesday. *What Has Changed*: *Winter Storm Watch Issued:* In effect from Sunday Night until Tuesday Afternoon for northern CT into western and central MA. *Main Weather Concerns: * 1) *Possible ice storm* in the higher terrain of western and central MA (eastern slopes of the Berkshires & Worcester County hills) into Tolland, Windham and western Hartford Counties in CT. Freezing rain is expected to begin in those areas Sunday evening and continue into Monday evening, with temperatures around 28-30 degrees. While some of these areas may transition to rain into Tuesday, additional light freezing rain, sleet or snow accumulations are possible across northwestern MA. Current projections are for between 0.25 and 0.50 inches of ice accretion (and potentially greater than 0.50" in some locations) in the Winter Storm Watch area. Uncertainty continues as to the amounts and timing of precipitation type transitions. 2) *Mixed bag of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain during the morning commute on Monday. * Any snow on the front end in northeast MA is expected to be short-lived and turning over to sleet and rain Sunday night into Monday. Lesser accumulations of freezing rain and sleet are expected across northern RI into the I-495 corridor in eastern MA. *Confidence...and what could still change:* We have high confidence that this storm system will occur and produce a wintry mix. While confidence has increased on precipitation types and the potential for significant icing in the Watch area, there remains low to moderate confidence on accumulations and distribution of precipitation types in northern RI into northeast MA. A colder scenario than currently forecast would mean less freezing rain and possibly significantly more sleet and/or snow. The potential exists for higher freezing rain totals in the high terrain of western and central MA into northern CT, which, if true, could lead to power outages and downed trees/wires. Hi everyone, We wanted to give you a heads-up about a storm that will be impacting our region Sunday night and continuing into Monday night. This will be a complicated storm with a mix of precipitation types across southern New England. *Main Weather Concerns: * 1) *Possible ice storm* in the higher terrain of western MA (eastern slopes of the Berkshires) and central MA (Worcester County hills). Freezing rain is expected to begin in those areas Sunday evening and continue into Monday evening, with temperatures around 30 degrees. Cannot rule out some freezing rain in northern CT as well. There is uncertainty at this time as to amounts, but current projections are for between 0.25 and 0.50 inches of ice accretion in the slopes of the Berkshires and Worcester hills. There is some potential for greater than 0.50 inches. A Watch may be needed in subsequent forecast issuances. 2) *Mixed bag of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain during the morning commute on Monday. * Any snow on the front end in northeast MA is expected to be short-lived and turning over to sleet and rain Sunday night into Monday. The worst conditions are expected to be outside of the I-495 corridor. On Monday, mainly rain is expected in the CT River valley, northern CT, RI, and eastern MA. *Confidence...and what could still change:* We have high confidence that this storm system will occur and produce a wintry mix, but still low to moderate confidence on amounts and distribution of precipitation types. A colder scenario than currently forecast would mean less freezing rain and possibly significantly more sleet and/or snow in northeastern MA. The potential exists for higher freezing rain totals in the high terrain of western and central MA, which, if true, could lead to power outages and downed trees/wires. Good afternoon, We still expect the threat of spotty light freezing rain and/or sleet across portions of western and northern MA after midnight through the Friday morning commute. Winter Weather Advisories may be issued with later forecasts if confidence grows in the threat of more widespread freezing rain. A Special Weather Statement has been issued to highlight the greatest concerns. Attached is the latest thinking on precipitation types, as well as ice accretion. *Locations:* The higher terrain towards the Berkshires, as well as northern MA generally along and north of Route 2. *When:* Between midnight and 9 AM Friday *What:* Light ice accumulations up to a few hundredths of an inch. Negligible sleet accumulations. *Impacts:* Untreated surfaces may become slippery and lead to travel difficulties for the Friday morning commute. *Confidence:* Moderate to high on precipitation types, closer to moderate on expected ice accumulations. Though the area threatened by freezing rain is fairly broad, freezing rain in any area may prove quite light and spotty in nature. This is likely to significantly limit ice amounts and coverage. This may cause slick roads for the Friday morning commute. Winter Weather Advisories *may* be needed in forthcoming updates if coverage of freezing rain proves greater than spotty. *Light Wintry Mix: * *Locations:* Mainly near and north of the Massachusetts Turnpike. *Timing*: Overnight Tonight into early Friday afternoon. Good morning, Here is the latest briefing for today's winter storm, possible snow squalls Wednesday afternoon/evening and arctic blast for Wednesday night and Thursday. *What has changed:* - Winter Weather Advisory expanded to Cape Cod - Lowered snow accumulations a bit south of the Pike *Accumulating snow and light to moderate ice accretion:* *Locations*: South of the Mass Pike. *Timin*g: Snow changing to sleet and freezing rain this morning with changeover line reaching the Mass Pike around noon. Rain this afternoon along the coast with areas of freezing rain persisting across northern CT, NW RI and adjacent interior MA. *Amounts*: 1 to 3 inches of snow with one to two tenths of an inch of ice accretion focused across northern CT and interior RI. *Impact*: Snow and ice will result in poor visibility and icy roads for the morning commute. The evening commute may also be impacted away from the coast. *Confidence*: Highest confidence for higher ice accretion in Northern CT. *Locations*: North of the Mass Pike. *Timin*g: Snow developing 6-8 am, mixing with or changing to sleet and freezing rain this afternoon, but mainly snow near the NH border. *Amounts*: 3 to 5 inches of snow/sleet. A trace to less than one tenth of an inch of ice accretion, mainly near the Mass Pike. *Impact*: Snow will impact the latter half of the morning commute with poor visibilities and snow covered roads. Good afternoon, *Changed*: Increased snowfall amount by 0.5 to 1 inch south of the MA turnpike. Moved the freezing rain coverage northwards to include parts of Worcester and Middlesex county. We are still expecting a winter storm to impact the region on Tuesday. Not a major snow/ice event but timing is problematic. Precipitation will start off as snow around 3 to 4am on Tuesday across Northern CT and RI, spreading northward through mid morning. Snow is expected to mix with or change over to sleet/freezing rain and then rain south of the MA turnpike. Wintry mix changes back to light snow from northwest to southeast Tuesday afternoon before taping off late Tuesday night. After that, there is a potential for snow squalls on Wednesday afternoon/early evening with the passage of an Arctic front, possibly impacting the evening commute but confidence is low on the extent and intensity. Lastly, the combination of NW gales and the arctic air mass could result in light freezing spray near shore Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. *Accumulating snow and light to moderate ice accretion:* *Locations*: All locations. *Timin*g: Tomorrow early morning into late evening. *Amounts*: 1 to 3 inches of snow/sleet with a few hundredths of an inch of freezing rain south of the MA turnpike. Up to two tenths of an inch of freezing rain is possible across northern CT and RI. 3 to 5 inches of snow/sleet north of the MA turnpike with up to 6 inches possible in far Western Franklin and Hampshire county. *Impact*: Snow accumulations of up to 1 inch per hour resulting in poor visibility and icy roads making for hazardous morning commute. *Confidence*: Moderate to high. It remains to be seen when the exact timing of the changeover to sleet/freezing rain will occur. Highest confidence for higher ice accretion in Northern CT. *Potential snow squalls:* *Locations*: All locations. *Timing*: Wednesday afternoon into early evening. *Amounts*: A quick coating to half an inch in less than 30 minutes. *Impact*: Temporarily reduced visibility could catch drivers off guard, especially for early evening commute.
