Good afternoon, We continue to forecast freezing rain late tonight into Saturday morning, which will make for hazardous travel conditions on untreated surfaces. Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for central and western Massachusetts. More details below. *What / Where / When ... * - Freezing rain will begin to overspread northern and western areas of Massachusetts and Connecticut, especially along the higher terrain of the Berkshires, Litchfield and Worcester Hills, beginning prior to daybreak Saturday. - Impacts to major travel routes ... along I-91 at and north of Springfield, MA and along the Massachusetts Route 2 corridor immediately west of Fitchburg, MA. - A gradual transition to rain S to N through the morning. Will see the last remnants of freezing rain along the Berkshires as late as 12 PM Saturday before any and all precipitation is plain rain. - A glaze of ice, up to a tenth of an inch, is possible on untreated surfaces. - Also, Saturday night into Sunday morning, especially north and west of the I-95 corridor, any remaining wet surfaces are expected to freeze. If left untreated, there is the threat of additional ice developing along area roadways. *Uncertainty ... * - Surface temperatures are critical with respect to freezing rain and ice accretion outcomes. Any measure of ice accretion will make surfaces slick. - However the greatest uncertainty is the exact timing of freezing rain to rain transition as outlined above. Precipitation will overspread southern New England after midnight Saturday, and continue into Saturday evening. Depending upon temperatures, areas of light sleet or freezing rain are possible. Eventually, any precipitation will transition to rain by Saturday afternoon. The temperature forecast will be critical, where only a small change can make a big difference in outcomes. Good afternoon, Slippery travel is possible early Thursday morning across interior portions of MA, RI and CT. Here are the details ... *What* ... light snow and possibly freezing drizzle *Where*... northern CT, northwest RI and western-central MA (EXCLUDING the cities of Boston, Providence and Hartford) *When* ... 4 am to 10 am Thursday *Uncertainty* ... areas of light snow will overspread this region during the predawn hours Thursday morning and continue into the morning commute. Light snow will change to light rain fairly quickly from south to north however during this transition there could be a period of freezing drizzle north and northwest of Boston, Providence and Hartford. We are not expecting much snow, mainly an inch or less but what concerns us is any duration of freezing drizzle, as only a light glaze of ice can result in treacherous road conditions. By mid morning temperatures will rise above freezing across the entire region, ending the threat for any icy road conditions. Again, for the metro areas of Boston, Providence and Hartford, any light snow should quickly change over to rain as temperatures rise through the 30s. It's north and northwest of this region where a Special Weather Statement has been issued to increase public awareness for the risk of freeing drizzle and icy roads. Happy New Year everyone, A period of strong to damaging west wind gusts are expected today from mid morning into early afternoon. Wind gusts to 50 to 60 mph are expected, with the strongest gusts across northern MA. The high wind warning for north central and NE MA was expanded to Boston and Norfolk county. Wind advisories remain in effect for the rest of southern New England. The strong wind gusts may result in some tree damage and widely scattered power outages. Hi everyone, (Attached are the new graphics). Here is a quick update on the storm system affecting us tonight and New Years Day. Not much has changed from the previous thinking. Rain has begun in southwest CT already and it will overspread the region tonight ' with a widespread inch or so of rain expected. Expecting it to start as a brief period of mixed snow or freezing rain in the east slopes of the Berkshires and northern Worcester hills before becoming all rain after about midnight. Temperatures as of 5 PM were in the mid 30s in those areas. A few slick spots are possible, but only a trace to a few hundredths of an inch of glaze are forecast, along with a coating to less than an inch of snow. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for those areas. Much more importantly, strong to damaging winds are forecast for New Years Day across the entire area. West winds will gust to 40-60 mph across the region. If we had to pinpoint the potential strongest areas, it would be from Worcester County into northeast MA, where we have upgraded to a High Wind Warning. All other areas are in a Wind Advisory. NWS Boston Weather Briefing #2: Wintry Mix and Strong Winds

Good Morning Everyone, We are monitoring the potential for minor accumulations of snow and ice tonight across interior sections of Massachusetts and for the possibility of damaging winds Tuesday (New Year's Day). A few graphics are attached. *Wintry Weather Tonight: High Confidence* - Snow begins between 5 and 8 PM in western and northern Massachusetts before changing to rain between 12 and 2 AM and ending overnight. - Most locations should receive a slushy inch or two of accumulation. - Light icing is possible across the higher elevations where some freezing rain may occur for a short time during the transition from snow to rain. - *Winter Weather Advisories* remain in effect for these locations due to slippery travel conditions. *Strong and Possibly Damaging Winds Tuesday: High Confidence* - West winds gusting to between 40 and 60 MPH are expected Tuesday, with the strongest gusts in Massachusetts where damaging winds are most likely. - *High Wind Watches *have been issued for these areas of Massachusetts for the potential of downed trees, large branches, and wires. - *Wind Advisories* have been issued for northern Connecticut, Rhode Island, and southeast Massachusetts (including Cape Cod and the Islands). Hello, A storm moving up through the Midwest and St Lawrence Valley will bring rain to Southern New England from Monday late-afternoon through Tuesday morning. Cold air at the start of the storm may cause areas of snow, freezing rain, and sleet during Monday night. Rising temperatures overnight will change all precipitation to rain. Most at risk : East Slopes of the Berkshires, Worcester Hills. Also of concern : Northern Connecticut, Northern Rhode Island, Northeast Massachusetts. Good afternoon, A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain is still expected early Friday morning, roughly as early as 3 am to as late as 9 am. Biggest concern focuses on the forecast glaze of ice for the Friday AM commute, especially across the Berkshires and Worcester Hills. Surfaces becoming slick, in addition to reduced visibility, will result in hazardous travel conditions. WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES continue across interior portions of MA / CT / RI.
