Freezing Drizzle/Light Freezing Rain Threat Northwest of Boston to Providence Into This Evening

Good morning everyone This is just a very brief outline concerning areas of freezing drizzle/light freezing rain threat to the northwest of the Boston to Providence corridor into this evening. There also is the potential for Wednesday morning snow, mainly across the interior high terrain along the east slopes of the Berkshires and Worcester Hills. *WHAT/WHERE/WHEN: * - Areas of freezing drizzle will remain possible through the afternoon to the northwest of the Boston to Providence corridor. - Steadier rain/freezing rain overspreads the region between 5 and 9 pm this evening. Greatest concern for freezing rain will be across portions of the CT River Valley, into central and northeast MA. - We will need to keep a close eye on northeast MA, especially Middlesex and Essex counties. Temperatures may temporarily rise above freezing, but fall back into the upper 20s to the lower 30s later this afternoon and evening, resulting in icy conditions developing. - *Untreated roads/walkways may already be or become icy to the northwest of the Boston to Providence corridor. Evening rush hour may be impacted.* - There is a low risk that sub-freezing temperatures move back even into the Boston metro area for a time this evening, resulting in the development of icy conditions. - Lastly, there may be a burst of snow Wednesday morning across the higher terrain of MA with an impact to the am rush hour possible. This would mainly be across the east slopes of the Berks and perhaps portions of the Worcester Hills. We will have more on this later in the afternoon, but a few inches are possible especially along the east slopes of the Berks. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Good Evening, The NWS in Norton has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for snow and freezing rain in parts of Western and Central Massachusetts late tonight and Tuesday morning. The advisory covers the area we are most confident will have snow and freezing rain. Location : East Slopes of the Berkshires, Eastern Franklin Co., Northern Worcester Co. Starting time : Western Mass 4-5 AM, Central Mass 5-6 AM Expected hazards : Snow with up to 1 inch accumulation. Freezing Rain with a glaze of ice accumulation. Ending time : 11 AM to 1 PM. These hazards may affect the morning commute. Good afternoon, We continue to forecast freezing rain late tonight into Saturday morning, which will make for hazardous travel conditions on untreated surfaces. Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for central and western Massachusetts. More details below. *What / Where / When ... * - Freezing rain will begin to overspread northern and western areas of Massachusetts and Connecticut, especially along the higher terrain of the Berkshires, Litchfield and Worcester Hills, beginning prior to daybreak Saturday. - Impacts to major travel routes ... along I-91 at and north of Springfield, MA and along the Massachusetts Route 2 corridor immediately west of Fitchburg, MA. - A gradual transition to rain S to N through the morning. Will see the last remnants of freezing rain along the Berkshires as late as 12 PM Saturday before any and all precipitation is plain rain. - A glaze of ice, up to a tenth of an inch, is possible on untreated surfaces. - Also, Saturday night into Sunday morning, especially north and west of the I-95 corridor, any remaining wet surfaces are expected to freeze. If left untreated, there is the threat of additional ice developing along area roadways. *Uncertainty ... * - Surface temperatures are critical with respect to freezing rain and ice accretion outcomes. Any measure of ice accretion will make surfaces slick. - However the greatest uncertainty is the exact timing of freezing rain to rain transition as outlined above. As alluded by the prior email, any small change can make a big difference in outcomes. Precipitation will overspread southern New England after midnight Saturday, and continue into Saturday evening. Depending upon temperatures, areas of light sleet or freezing rain are possible. Eventually, any precipitation will transition to rain by Saturday afternoon. The temperature forecast will be critical, where only a small change can make a big difference in outcomes. A Winter Weather Advisory is possible when confidence increases. Also, colder air arrives Saturday night, and especially Sunday night. Any remaining wet surfaces will freeze Sunday night. Good afternoon, Slippery travel is possible early Thursday morning across interior portions of MA, RI and CT. Here are the details ... *What* ... light snow and possibly freezing drizzle *Where*... northern CT, northwest RI and western-central MA (EXCLUDING the cities of Boston, Providence and Hartford) *When* ... 4 am to 10 am Thursday *Uncertainty* ... areas of light snow will overspread this region during the predawn hours Thursday morning and continue into the morning commute. Light snow will change to light rain fairly quickly from south to north however during this transition there could be a period of freezing drizzle north and northwest of Boston, Providence and Hartford. We are not expecting much snow, mainly an inch or less but what concerns us is any duration of freezing drizzle, as only a light glaze of ice can result in treacherous road conditions. By mid morning temperatures will rise above freezing across the entire region, ending the threat for any icy road conditions. Again, for the metro areas of Boston, Providence and Hartford, any light snow should quickly change over to rain as temperatures rise through the 30s. It's north and northwest of this region where a Special Weather Statement has been issued to increase public awareness for the risk of freeing drizzle and icy roads. Happy New Year everyone, A period of strong to damaging west wind gusts are expected today from mid morning into early afternoon. Wind gusts to 50 to 60 mph are expected, with the strongest gusts across northern MA. The high wind warning for north central and NE MA was expanded to Boston and Norfolk county. Wind advisories remain in effect for the rest of southern New England. The strong wind gusts may result in some tree damage and widely scattered power outages.
