Good morning everyone, We have issued a Flash Flood Watch for portions of Southern New England, along with High Wind Watch for east and south coastal Massachusetts for a storm which will begin to impact the region late today. An updated briefing package is included with this email. There is a low risk for some light freezing rain, mainly across extreme NW MA this afternoon and evening. Otherwise, rainfall begins everywhere this evening and overnight. The risk for heaviest rain, and strongest winds will be during the daylight hours on Thursday. Good morning everyone, Temperatures will gradually warm through the day today, such that the wind chills will diminish and risk for freezing spray offshore diminishes as well. We continue to monitor the risk for heavy rain, which may bring about some urban and poor drainage, as well as a risk for river flooding late Wednesday into Thursday. There is also the risk for strong wind gusts especially across the Cape and Islands during the day on Thursday. *What / Where / When ...* - Heavy Rainfall and Possible Flooding - Greatest risk across eastern Connecticut, Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts for late Wednesday night into Thursday - Rainfall of 1-2 inches across southern New England with locally up to 3 inches for RI and SE Massachusetts - Areas of urban and poor drainage flooding possible - Strong winds, with gusts to around 50 mph possible Thursday, especially on the Cape and Islands. Good afternoon everyone, Attached is our updated briefing package outlining concerns through Monday morning. *What / Where / When ...* - Lingering winter weather - A mix of freezing drizzle and/or sleet will linger into the early evening hours, as late as 7 pm across the E MA coastline - Additional ice accretion of a trace forecast through that time - Winter weather advisories over RI and Southeast MA through 7 pm - Flash Freeze, Slick Conditions - Flash freeze ongoing along and southeast of the Boston to Providence corridor - Rapid freezing of wet surfaces, standing water - *By evening*, Boston to Providence will be in the teens, S&E in the 20s, Cape & Islands above freezing - *At midnight*, Boston to Providence will be in the single digits, S&E in the teens, Cape & Islands in the low 20s - Bitterly Cold Wind Chills - Bitterly cold wind chills of -15 to -30°F tonight into Monday morning. - Bitter cold will continue through Tuesday morning with wind chills around -10 to -15°F - Wind Chill headlines through Monday - Potential Downed Limbs, Isolated Power Outages - Gusty winds may result in downed limbs and/or isolated power outages across areas N&W of the Hartford to Boston corridor where observed heavier amounts snow and ice remain on trees. - Moderate to Heavy Freezing Spray - Gale Warnings on all waters through Monday morning (may need to be extended as late as Tuesday morning). - Moderate to locally heavy freezing spray later tonight through Monday night - Minor Coastal Flooding - East-coastal MA Monday morning - Isolated pockets of minor flooding along the coast for typically prone locations, especially Boston Harbor south to Cape Cod Bay, as well as northern Nantucket - Mainly due to lingering swell and high astronomical tides *Confidence ...* - High confidence overall, but can't rule out colder temperatures surging in a bit faster by an hour than presently forecast resulting in a quicker freeze across Southern New England. - It's the expectation that as the storm presently passing over SE New England sweeps out to sea that cold air will surge quickly S&E over above-freezing areas of SE New England. Definitely a flash freeze is to be expected no matter what into this evening with all locations below freezing, Nantucket at the latest by 9 pm. Good morning everyone, Just an update on the current situation and expectations through the day today. At this time, temperatures are falling faster than previously forecast across the eastern portions of Massachusetts and the northern portions of Rhode Island. We expect that the freezing line will continue to move southward through mid day, then stall and oscillate around the I-95 corridor between Providence and RT 128 in Mass through mid day. Then, begin to move back southward this afternoon. *Those areas already at or below freezing will likely remain at or below freezing, yielding mainly freezing rain/sleet until the evening. Ice accumulations have been adjusted. We expect very localized pockets of +0.5 inches of total ice accumulations across the central and northeast portions of Southern New England. [2019.01.20 AM NWS Boston Weather Briefing] Power Outage Concerns/Flash Freeze Followed By Bitterly Cold Wind Chills

Good morning everyone, Attached is our updated briefing package. We will also include a brief outline on the main concerns through Monday morning. *Highlights:* - Accumulating snow is pretty much is over from this storm by 7 am. Along and southeast of the Boston to Providence corridor, heavy rain and some street flooding is the concern this morning. Minor coastal flooding expected too with the high astronomical tide. - Freezing rain mixed with sleet at times will be the main concern this morning through the afternoon northwest of the Boston to Providence corridor. - Growing concern for 0.25" to 0.50" of ice accretion across portions of the interior, especially in the CT River Valley, Worcester Hills and interior northeast MA. Scattered power outages and downed trees a concern. - Flash Freeze occurs along and southeast of the Boston to Providence corridor between noon and 5 pm. Exact timing uncertain, but a rapid drop of temperatures into the 20s will occur resulting in hazardous travel. - Bitterly cold wind chills of 15 to 25 below zero anticipated later tonight into Monday morning near and northwest of the Boston to Providence corridor. Wind chills between 25 and 30 below zero across the east slopes of the Berks. *Confidence:* - High confidence in freezing rain and sleet through the afternoon across much of interior southern New England. Precipitation ends between 4 and 8 pm this evening. - Uncertainty revolves around specific amounts of freezing rain and extent of tree damage/power outage threat. - Flash freeze expected along and southeast of the Boston to Providence corridor between noon and 5 pm, but exact timing uncertain. - High confidence in bitterly cold wind chills tonight into Monday morning. Here you can find the hour-by-hour forecast for a particular point by clicking on a map. https://forecast.weather.gov/gridpoint.php?site=box&TypeDefault=graphical Should you have any questions, comments and/or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. *Changes ...* - Latest forecast has trended warmer. - Lesser snowfall amounts towards the N&W. - Main strip of icing shifted N&W, but heaviest still remaining around 0.2 - 0.4" - Hartford County CT upgraded to a WINTER STORM WARNING - Flood watch issued for Southeast New England. - Expectation of 1 to 2 inches with locally higher amounts. - A lot of residual water which will easily freeze as Arctic air pours in behind the storm. - Coastal Flood headlines rescinded to just ADVISORY for the entire coastline. - Forecast minor coastal flooding along all coastlines, especially from Cape Ann northward. *What / Where / When / Impacts ...* - Heavy wet snow / sleet over N&W MA & CT with freezing rain / icing across interior areas of New England (roughly Hartford towards Northeast MA). - Greatest concern is the weight of the two on trees. - Add in the winds, there's an exacerbated threat for downed limbs and power outages. - Concern increases Sunday night with Arctic air building in, temperatures dropping down into the single digits with wind chills 15 to 25 degrees below zero. - Strong winds. - Strong southerlies over Southeast New England Sunday, becoming blustery out of the NW going into Sunday night into Monday morning over all of Southern New England. - Again, concern with downed limbs weighted by ice and snow going through Monday morning over N&W portions of Southern New England. - Flash Freeze. - Especially over Southeast New England which will see warmer temperatures and a soaking rain. - Residual water along roadways likely freezing if left untreated as Arctic air builds S across the region late Sunday into Sunday night. - Will make for significant impacts during the Monday AM commute, especially along the Boston - Providence corridor and points S&E. - Marine. - Gale warnings on all waters. - Moderate to freezing spray developing Sunday night on through Monday, perhaps continuing into Tuesday morning.
