Good morning, We wanted to provide awareness of slick and icy roadways from light accretion of freezing rain and sleet overnight tonight to early Friday afternoon. This may cause slick roads for the Friday morning commute. Winter Weather Advisories *may* be needed in forthcoming updates if coverage of freezing rain proves greater than spotty. *Light Wintry Mix: * *Locations:* Mainly near and north of the Massachusetts Turnpike. *Timing*: Overnight Tonight into early Friday afternoon. To better show approximate timing, a weather type image animation is attached which shows the precipitation type transitions through time. Individual images used to create the below GIF animation are also attached to this e-mail for reference. Rain this afternoon along the coast with areas of freezing rain persisting across northern CT, NW RI and adjacent interior MA. *Amounts*: 1 to 3 inches of snow with one to two tenths of an inch of ice accretion focused across northern CT and interior RI. *Impact*: Snow and ice will result in poor visibility and icy roads for the morning commute. Good afternoon, *Changed*: Increased snowfall amount by 0.5 to 1 inch south of the MA turnpike. Moved the freezing rain coverage northwards to include parts of Worcester and Middlesex county. We are still expecting a winter storm to impact the region on Tuesday. Not a major snow/ice event but timing is problematic. Precipitation will start off as snow around 3 to 4am on Tuesday across Northern CT and RI, spreading northward through mid morning. Snow is expected to mix with or change over to sleet/freezing rain and then rain south of the MA turnpike. Wintry mix changes back to light snow from northwest to southeast Tuesday afternoon before taping off late Tuesday night. After that, there is a potential for snow squalls on Wednesday afternoon/early evening with the passage of an Arctic front, possibly impacting the evening commute but confidence is low on the extent and intensity. Lastly, the combination of NW gales and the arctic air mass could result in light freezing spray near shore Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. *Accumulating snow and light to moderate ice accretion:* *Locations*: All locations. *Timin*g: Tomorrow early morning into late evening. *Amounts*: 1 to 3 inches of snow/sleet with a few hundredths of an inch of freezing rain south of the MA turnpike. Up to two tenths of an inch of freezing rain is possible across northern CT and RI. 3 to 5 inches of snow/sleet north of the MA turnpike with up to 6 inches possible in far Western Franklin and Hampshire county. *Impact*: Snow accumulations of up to 1 inch per hour resulting in poor visibility and icy roads making for hazardous morning commute. *Confidence*: Moderate to high. Good morning. Expect dry conditions today and tonight across the region. Small Craft Advisories are in effect today, but will end as winds diminish during the day. *Accumulating snow to a Wintry Mix Late Tonight through Tuesday evening* *Headlines*: *Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for late Tonight through Tuesday for areas away from Cape Cod and the islands.* The next winter weather event is fast approaching. Low pressure will move across the mid Atlantic region today, then off the coast tonight. Moisture from this low will shift northeast, moving into northern Connecticut, most of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts by around 3 to 4 AM Tuesday, then spread northward through mid morning across the remainder of the region. Will see the snow change to a wintry mix mainly near and south of the Mass Pike by around 9 AM. The mix will change to rain along the coastline by midday, while the mixed precipitation will continue to push further inland through the afternoon. As low pressure passes across the southern waters, the wintry mix will change back to snow Tuesday afternoon before tapering off Tuesday night. This morning's snowfall and ice accumulation maps are attached, as well as the forecast onset of the precipitation early Tuesday morning. Forecasted snowfall of 1 to 3 inches of snow/sleet south of the Mass Pike into NE CT, RI and SE Mass, while with 3 to 5 inches is forecast as mainly snow north of the Pike to near north central CT. There is a *low risk* for up to 6 inches near the NH border from N of Fitchburg to Greenfield. Freezing rain of up to one-tenth inch is expected across RI, northern CT, and interior MA south of the Mass Pike. A few spots of 0.10 to 0.25 inches of ice are possible, especially in northern CT and NW RI. *Confidence*: *High*. There will be light snow across most areas by around 3 to 4 AM, then will become steadier and heavier by mid morning. There is still some uncertainty as to the exact timing of the changing precipitation type during the morning, which will affect the ice and snow accumulations especially near and north of the Mass Pike. *Arctic Blast moving in Wednesday night and Thursday* *Potential for:* *Wind Chill Headlines* *late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning*. Wind chill values of -10 to -20 degrees by early Thursday morning A strong Arctic cold front will swing across the region Wednesday afternoon, bringing increasing NW winds along with dropping temperatures. Expect temperatures to bottom out in the single digits across central and western areas by around 6 AM Thursday morning, ranging to the teens to around 20 across the coastal plain. With the strong winds, with gusts upwards to 25 to 40 mph, will see wind chill indices as low as *-10 to -20 degrees* across portions of central and western Massachusetts, especially across the higher terrain, ranging to around zero to near 10 below elsewhere. *Confidence*: *Moderate to High*. The lowest wind chill values will occur from *3 to 4 AM through 9 to 10 AM*, longest across central and western Massachusetts. Highs on Thursday will only reach from 15 to 25 degrees, except the upper 20s along the immediate south coast, but wind chill values will remain low, mainly from *zero to 10 above*. Good evening, Winds will be gradually diminishing tonight. Wind Advisories will expire between 7 PM and 9 PM this evening and Gale Warnings will be lowered before daybreak. Attention will then turn to the next winter weather event, which will be arriving Monday night and continuing on Tuesday. *Accumulating Snow to Wintry Mix: Monday Night and Tuesday* We now have high confidence in a period of wintry weather for Monday night and Tuesday. We are expecting snow to develop across the entire region, except for a mix of rain, sleet and snow along the immediate south coast Monday evening between 8 PM and 11 PM. The snow is forecast to change to sleet and freezing rain over interior sections mainly south of the Mass Pike overnight. A band of moderate to heavy snow could develop from Springfield to Worcester, northward to the NH border, mainly between 4 AM and 10 AM Tuesday morning. Thus, the Tuesday morning commute does look like it will be adversely impacted by a mix of wintry weather, ranging from snow to ice. The Boston area southward to the Cape/Islands, as well as most of RI, will likely be all rain by early Tuesday morning. Current snowfall and ice accumulation maps are attached. We are forecasting 1 to 3 inches of snow/sleet south of the Mass Pike with 3 to 5 inches of mainly snow north of the Pike, with 6 inches possible near the NH border. Freezing rain of up to one-tenth inch is expected in RI, northern CT, and interior MA south of the Mass Pike, but a few spots of 0.10 to 0.25 inches of ice are possible, especially in northern CT and northern RI. *Confidence:* Remains moderate to high on wintry weather impacting the Tuesday morning commute. Changeovers for precipitation type and timing remain uncertain which may alter the overall snow and/or ice accumulations. There is the potential for steadier bands of snow that may produce snow rates at or an inch per hour or a bit higher into early Tuesday morning, especially north of the Mass Pike. *Arctic Blast Wednesday night and Thursday* A major Arctic cold front will blast through the region Wednesday evening, accompanied by brief wind gusts that could reach Wind Advisory criteria (40 to 50 mph), possible snow squalls, and then frigid temperatures. Lows will range from 0 far northwest MA to the teens in southeast MA and southern RI. Wind Chill Advisories may be needed for western and central MA, where wind chills of -10 to -20 degrees are forecast. Gales are quite likely over the coastal waters. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. *Confidence*: High. *High Seas: * *Locations*: Coastal waters from Provincetown to Chatham to Nantucket and out 20 nm, Coastal waters 25nm south of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. *Timing*: Through 7 PM Sunday. *Wave Heights*: 10 to 15 feet. *Impact*: Hazardous seas combined with strong winds could capsize or damage vessels. *Confidence*: High. *Accumulating Snow to Wintry Mix: Monday Night and Tuesday* We are continuing to monitor a period of wintry weather for Monday night and Tuesday. Confidence continues to increase that conditions will deteriorate Monday overnight through the Tuesday morning commute, and be impacted by snow and/or ice covered roads with potential for travel difficulties. The precipitation will begin as snow across most of the region, except as a mix of rain, sleet and snow along the immediate south coast Monday evening. Expect the snow to gradually change to a wintry mix by around 1 to 3 AM Monday. While most of the interior will remain a wintry mix, the snow and/or mixed precipitation will change over to all rain across E and SE MA into coastal RI, as temperatures warm rise to above freezing earlier. *Confidence:* Remains moderate to high on wintry weather impacting the Tuesday morning commute, though Moderate confidence in snow and ice accumulations. Changeovers for precipitation type and timing remain uncertain which may alter the overall snow and/or ice accumulations. There is the potential for steadier bands of snow that may produce snow rates at or an inch per hour or a bit higher into early Tuesday morning, though it is not clear where any of the bands may set up.
