Good morning, We expect precipitation to end across most of southern New England by 7 AM, with all areas being dry by noon. Rain will be the dominant form of precipitation across eastern MA and RI. Still a threat of light icing north and west of I-495 in MA, into Worcester county. Winter Weather Advisories continue until 7 AM this morning for this threat of additional light icing. It is possible some of these advisories may need to be extended a couple of hours. Will evaluate temperatures closer to that time. Only a trace of additional icing is expected. Good afternoon everyone, Here is an update on the remainder of the ongoing winter storm. As of this afternoon we have received reports of icing from 0.25 to as much as 0.75 inches (in Goshen) in the slopes of the Berkshires, and up to 0.25" of icing in the Worcester Hills. This has been a very messy event with many locations switching between sleet, freezing rain, and snow. Good morning, Here is the latest information on a storm that is currently ongoing across Southern New England early this morning. We are still expecting significant/severe higher-elevation icing for the Berkshires into northern Worcester and northwest Middlesex Counties through tonight. Lesser, though still impactful icing is still anticipated for most areas west of Interstate 495. *What has changed:* Winter Weather Advisories which were previously in effect for eastern Massachusetts and central Rhode Island have been *cancelled*. Freezing rain is no longer expected to impact these areas. Mainly rain is now anticipated for these locations. Due to warmer surface temperatures, reductions in ice accumulations were made. Significant icing is still expected in the higher terrain in the Berkshires into northern Worcester County. *Current Watches/Warnings/Advisories in effect:* All warnings and advisories over land are in effect from tonight through Tuesday AM - *Ice Storm Warning **for the eastern slopes of the Berkshires, northern Worcester County and northwest Middlesex County.* Here is where the most significant icing is expected due to a long duration of freezing rain. Severe impacts can be expected with extensive power outages and tree damage. This morning's commute will be treacherous in these areas, with continued impacts into this afternoon's commute as well. - Winter Weather Advisory *for northern CT, northern Providence County in RI and across western, central and northeast MA west of I-495*. Mix of precipitation types for these areas. Expect lesser, but still impactful accretions of freezing rain and sleet. This morning's commute will be slick for these locations, with slickened roads still possible into this afternoon's commute. *Marine Watches/Warnings in effect:* - *Gale Warnings* for all of the coastal waters except for Narragansett Bay, through early Tuesday. *Main Weather Concerns: * 1) *Severe icing across the higher elevations* *of* *western and north central MA through tonight*. Coverage of freezing rain will continue to expand early this morning and last into Monday evening. For the slopes of the Berkshires, we still expect to have one half to three quarters of an inch of ice with isolated amounts up to three-quarters of an inch. In northern Worcester and northwest Middlesex Counties, one-quarter to one-half inch of ice with isolated totals to two-thirds of an inch. East to northeast winds will increase today, with gusts of 20-30 mph in the higher terrain by late afternoon. This, coupled with the ice, could worsen the impacts. By Tuesday, temperatures increase into the upper 30s and low 40s in the higher terrain allowing for melting. 2)* Lower elevations: Lesser amounts of freezing rain (with some limited periods of sleet at times) through today. *Accumulations of freezing rain and sleet will continue to expand in coverage, and impact this morning's commute. Additional light icing may impact this afternoon's commute as well. Icing amounts range from a light glaze to one-quarter inch. 3) *Strong east to northeast winds* are expected over the coastal waters and along the South Coast this afternoon into tonight. Expect gusts of 40-45 mph across Cape Cod and the Islands tonight. *What we are uncertain about:* *Moderate to high confidence:* - Uncertain on the duration and exact precipitation type outside of the Ice Storm Warning areas. - Uncertain on the areal coverage and duration of sleet. With the tendency for warmer temperatures, freezing rain and/or rain should predominate as weather types with less sleet. Good afternoon everyone, Here is the latest information on a storm that will impact Southern New England tonight into Tuesday. The greatest impacts are expected across the higher elevations of the slopes of the Berkshires, northern Worcester County and northwest Middlesex County. The graphics attached include the Winter Storm Severity Index (gives an idea where the worst impacts can be anticipated), storm total ice accumulations, current winter headlines, precipitation onset time, sustained wind speeds and peak gusts tonight into Monday afternoon (i.e. period when icing is greatest). *What has changed:* Winter Storm Warning changed to an Ice Storm Warning for northern Worcester County and northwest Middlesex County. In those areas we now expect one quarter to one half inch of ice with isolated totals to three quarters of an inch. *Current Watches/Warnings/Advisories in effect:* All warnings and advisories over land are in effect from tonight through Tuesday AM - *Ice Storm Warning **for the eastern slopes of the Berkshires, northern Worcester County and northwest Middlesex County.* Here is where the most significant icing is expected due to a long duration of freezing rain. Across the MA East Coast, northernmost RI and CT a wintry mix is expected...changing to rain on Monday. Icing amounts range from a light glaze to one quarter inch. *Localized totals may be near a half-inch in spots northwest of I-84 and I-495 if freezing rain can remain more prolonged*. 3) *Strong east to northeast winds* are expected over the coastal waters and along the South Coast Monday night. Expect gusts of 40-45 mph across Cape Cod and the Islands Monday afternoon and evening. *What we are uncertain about:* *Moderate confidence:* - Uncertain on the duration and exact precipitation type outside of the Ice Storm Warning areas. Good morning everyone, Here is the latest forecast information on a complicated storm system bringing concerns for significant higher-elevation icing and wintry mix of precipitation types for Southern New England tonight into Tuesday. *What Has Changed:* *Winter Headlines (In Effect Tonight through Tuesday AM, All Areas):* Ice Storm Warnings *for the eastern slopes of the Berkshires.* Predominantly freezing rain of a prolonged-duration is expected here, with the *most significant icing and impacts* expected for these locations. *Winter Storm Warning* *for northern Worcester County into northwest Middlesex County in MA. *Wintry mixture of freezing rain and sleet here, though greatest impact from freezing rain. *Significant icing and impacts* expected. Winter Weather Advisories *for most of the remainder of Southern New England (except southern RI, southern Plymouth & Bristol Counties in MA into Cape Cod and the Islands)*. Mix of precip types for these areas, with lesser though still impactful accretions of freezing rain and sleet (with snow possible northern MA). *Marine Headlines:* *Gale Warnings* for southern coastal offshore waters. In effect Monday 7 AM into early Tuesday. *Gale Watches* for eastern coastal and offshore waters. In effect Monday Night into Tuesday. =============================================== *Main Weather Concerns: * 1) *Higher Elevation Significant Icing in* *western MA (eastern slopes of the Berkshires) and north-central MA (Worcester County hills into northwest Middlesex County) developing tonight thru Monday night*. Icing is expected to begin in tonight and continue into Monday evening, with temperatures around 30 degrees. There is now high confidence in icing accumulations of a half-inch or greater in each area, with *local amounts up to one inch possible in the eastern slopes of the Berkshires where freezing rain is expected to predominate*. 2)* Lower Elevations: Lesser amounts of sleet and freezing rain develop tonight and continue through Monday. *Accumulations of freezing rain and sleet will affect the Monday morning commute. While freezing rain is still expected to continue across interior MA and northern CT for the afternoon commute, a wintry mix of sleet to rain is expected towards the MA East Coast. Icing amounts range from a light glaze to a quarter-inch, though *may locally be near a half-inch in spots N/W of I-84 and I-495 if freezing rain can remain more prolonged*. 3) A* brief period of snow* is possible at the end of the storm late Monday night into Tuesday, especially in northern Massachusetts near the New Hampshire border. Up to a couple inches of snow is expected in these areas. 4) *Strong east to northeast winds* are expected over the coastal waters and along the South Coast Monday night. Hi everyone, We continue to follow the potential storm that will be impacting our region Sunday night through Tuesday morning. This will be a complicated storm with a mix of precipitation types across Southern New England. *Changes with the New Forecast:* 1) The Winter Storm Watch will be expanded east to include Western Essex, Northwest and Western Middlesex in MA, and Northwest Providence and Western Kent Counties in RI. The starting time will be moved an hour earlier, to 6 PM. 2) A Gale Watch will be issued for the coastal waters, starting 7 AM Monday. The ending time will range from 2 AM Tuesday to 10 AM Tuesday. 3) We anticipate a Wind Advisory will eventually be needed for Cape Cod and the Islands for Monday, due to east-northeast wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph. *Main Weather Concerns: * 1) *Possible ice storm* in the *higher terrain of western MA (eastern slopes of the Berkshires) and central MA (Worcester County hills) developing Sunday night* and continuing through Monday night. Freezing rain is expected to begin in those areas Sunday evening and continue into Monday evening, with temperatures around 30 degrees. Cannot rule out some freezing rain in northern CT as well. There is uncertainty at this time as to amounts, but current projections are for between 0.25 and 0.50 inches of ice accretion in the slopes of the Berkshires and Worcester hills. There is some potential for greater than 0.50 inches. 2)* Lower amounts of sleet and freezing rain develop Sunday night and continue during the morning commute on Monday. * Sleet and freezing rain continue late Monday in Northern Massachusetts. Mainly rain is expected along the coast during the storm, as well as south of the Mass Pike after Monday morning. 3) A* brief period of snow* is possible at the start of the storm, especially in northern Massachusetts near the New Hampshire border. Any snow is expected to be short-lived and turning over to sleet and rain Sunday night into Monday. 4) *Strong east to northeast winds* are expected over the coastal waters and along the South Coast Monday and Monday night. Expect sustained winds of 25 to 30 kt/30 to 35 mph, and gusts of 35 to 40 kt/40 to 50 mph. *Confidence...and what could still change:* We have high confidence that this storm system will occur and produce a wintry mix, but still low to moderate confidence on amounts and distribution of precipitation types. A colder scenario than currently forecast would mean less freezing rain and possibly significantly more sleet and/or snow in northeastern MA. Good morning, Following is an update on a complicated storm system that is expected to bring a wintry mix to interior Southern New England starting Sunday night. While much of this wintry weather event will be mainly Sunday night thru Monday night, a continuation of wintry weather accumulations is possible in parts of northern and northwest MA into Tuesday. *What Has Changed*: *Winter Storm Watch Issued:* In effect from Sunday Night until Tuesday Afternoon for northern CT into western and central MA. *Main Weather Concerns: * 1) *Possible ice storm* in the higher terrain of western and central MA (eastern slopes of the Berkshires & Worcester County hills) into Tolland, Windham and western Hartford Counties in CT. Freezing rain is expected to begin in those areas Sunday evening and continue into Monday evening, with temperatures around 28-30 degrees. While some of these areas may transition to rain into Tuesday, additional light freezing rain, sleet or snow accumulations are possible across northwestern MA. Current projections are for between 0.25 and 0.50 inches of ice accretion (and potentially greater than 0.50" in some locations) in the Winter Storm Watch area. Uncertainty continues as to the amounts and timing of precipitation type transitions. 2) *Mixed bag of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain during the morning commute on Monday. * Any snow on the front end in northeast MA is expected to be short-lived and turning over to sleet and rain Sunday night into Monday. Lesser accumulations of freezing rain and sleet are expected across northern RI into the I-495 corridor in eastern MA. *Confidence...and what could still change:* We have high confidence that this storm system will occur and produce a wintry mix. While confidence has increased on precipitation types and the potential for significant icing in the Watch area, there remains low to moderate confidence on accumulations and distribution of precipitation types in northern RI into northeast MA. A colder scenario than currently forecast would mean less freezing rain and possibly significantly more sleet and/or snow. The potential exists for higher freezing rain totals in the high terrain of western and central MA into northern CT, which, if true, could lead to power outages and downed trees/wires. Good afternoon, We still expect the threat of spotty light freezing rain and/or sleet across portions of western and northern MA after midnight through the Friday morning commute. Winter Weather Advisories may be issued with later forecasts if confidence grows in the threat of more widespread freezing rain. A Special Weather Statement has been issued to highlight the greatest concerns. Attached is the latest thinking on precipitation types, as well as ice accretion. *Locations:* The higher terrain towards the Berkshires, as well as northern MA generally along and north of Route 2. *When:* Between midnight and 9 AM Friday *What:* Light ice accumulations up to a few hundredths of an inch. Negligible sleet accumulations. *Impacts:* Untreated surfaces may become slippery and lead to travel difficulties for the Friday morning commute. *Confidence:* Moderate to high on precipitation types, closer to moderate on expected ice accumulations. Though the area threatened by freezing rain is fairly broad, freezing rain in any area may prove quite light and spotty in nature. This is likely to significantly limit ice amounts and coverage.
