[2025.12.10 PM] NWS Boston EM Briefing: Strong Winds and Frigid Temperatures Thursday into Friday

Good afternoon, Another surge of Arctic air will be returning to Southern New England Thursday and Friday, which will bring a period of gusty to strong northwest winds to go along with low wind chill temperatures. Northwest wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph will be common, but wind gusts up to 50 mph are expected in the higher terrain of Massachusetts and coastal portions of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Please find attached a one-page briefing with attached graphics showing the wind advisory areas, and the maximum wind gusts. We've also included a graphic showing the expected lowest wind chills - which would occur Thursday night to early Friday morning - for your decision-making needs. Good afternoon, Following is an update to the weather briefing for the winter storm ongoing in Southern New England. *What's Changed:* Added minor ( < 0.1") icing accretion from light freezing rain for portions of northern Connecticut and western and central Massachusetts. This has prompted expanding the Winter Weather Advisory for Hartford and Tolland Counties through 7 AM Wednesday. *Timing: * Moderate snows for most of interior central and western Massachusetts, with some occasional sleet and freezing rain mixing in across portions of northern Connecticut, will continue through the afternoon before easing up by evening and tapering off overnight. Rain in portions of eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island are expected to continue through early evening, then change over to a brief period of wet snow between 8 pm and 1 am before tapering off in all areas overnight. This will be the final briefing for this winter weather event, unless there are substantial changes. Thank You! Good morning, Please find attached an updated one-page briefing regarding the winter storm expected to impact the region Today and tonight. *What's Changed:* Snow totals have slightly changed since the last update, however, these were not significant changes. Confidence in the location of the heaviest snow and where the greatest impacts will be has continued to increase. *Timing:* No changes to timing from previous briefing. See attached graphics for more details. *Lingering Forecast Challenges:* Although overall forecast confidence in the storm’s amounts and impacts has increased, a few questions remain: 1. The northward extent of warmer air is contributing to some uncertainty in the exact position of the rain-snow line, which will dictate snow totals particularly in NE MA. 2. Moderate confidence in minor snow accumulation along the I-95 and part of the northern I-495 corridor this evening/tonight. Lower confidence exists in the exact timing for this snow. This ties back into the uncertainty in the location of the rain-snow line. This will be the final briefing for this event barring any significant changes. Good afternoon, Please find attached an updated one-page briefing regarding the winter storm expected to impact the region Tuesday into Tuesday night. *What's Changed:* Forecast confidence has increased, leading us to issue Winter Storm Warnings for North Central Worcester County, all of Franklin County, and Western Hampshire County. Accumulations in these areas are likely to range from 6 to 9 inches. The heavy, wet nature of the snow may result in power outages. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Eastern Hampshire, Hampton, and southern Worcester Counties, where 3 to 5 inches of snow are possible on Tuesday. *Timing:* Snow will begin in the higher terrain between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM, moving from west to east. Rain will overspread the coastal plain after 10:00 AM. The bulk of precipitation is expected to end from west to east between 8:00 PM and midnight. *Lingering Forecast Challenges:* Although overall forecast confidence in the storm’s amounts and impacts has increased, a few questions remain: 1. Good morning, Here is an updated one-page briefing for the potential winter storm to impact the region Tuesday into Tuesday night. - Winter Storm Watches continue for most of MA west of I-95 - *Overall snowfall forecast has decreased.* - Greatest risk for 6 or more inches of snowfall will be across the northern Worcester Hills and towards the Berkshires. Questions remain about how quickly and far warmer air can move across interior southern New England. A faster timing will mean less snowfall for more locations. The Tuesday morning commute may be able to end before the widespread snowfall arrives. Areas from Worcester County west in MA and across CT are most likely to see some impacts on the Tuesday morning commute. The next update will be this afternoon, but sooner if there are appreciable changes to the forecast. Good afternoon, Here is an updated one-page briefing for the potential winter storm to impact the region Tuesday into Tuesday night. Since the last briefing we have issued Winter Storm Watches for much of MA west of I-95. The best chance for accumulations greater than 6 inches will be north of the MA Pike and west of I-495. However, there remains considerable uncertainty with the storm track and thus forecast confidence in snow amounts is low to moderate. If the storm track trends further south, more accumulation would be expected across eastern MA and RI. Further modifications to expected snowfall are likely. The next update will be by Monday afternoon, but sooner if there are appreciable changes to the forecast. Thanks. Good afternoon, Please find attached a one-page briefing and supplemental graphics concerning the potential for accumulating snowfall Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night. There have been no significant changes since yesterday's initial briefing. However, we do have updated snowfall exceedance probability graphics (2, 4, and 6 inches). Considerable uncertainty remains regarding the storm track and intensity and thus the overall snowfall potential. The chances for plowable snow remain highest across the interior and high terrain of Massachusetts. Good afternoon, Ahead of the post-Thanksgiving holiday weekend, we wanted to provide a heads-up that we are monitoring a storm system that may affect Southern New England on Tuesday into Tuesday evening. This system has the potential to bring accumulating snow and some impact to the interior and higher elevations of Southern New England, with a plain rain or wet snow-to-rain with lesser impact for the lower elevations and eastern/southern coasts. There are still too many unresolved details regarding the system's exact track and strength to provide specific snow accumulation forecasts at this time. In lieu of that, we have attached several exceedance probability graphics as a guide, which show the chances of exceeding 2-, 4-, and 6-or-more inches of snow between 7 am Tuesday to 7 am Wednesday. These probabilities are highest in interior portions of Southern New England, and lower along the eastern MA and RI coastal plain.
