Good afternoon, *** NOTE: We will re-send this email in a little while with graphics attached *** Here is the latest on the snow storm that is expected tonight into Saturday morning across much of interior Southern New England and into eastern MA. *Changes with this update:* - *Winter Storm Warning now in effect for **western Franklin, western Hampshire, western Franklin, and all of Worcester County (7 PM tonight to Noon Sat.) * - *Winter Weather Advisory expanded southeastward to include Bristol and Plymouth Counties in southeast MA, except along the immediate south coast and all of Providence County in RI (**7 PM tonight to Noon Sat.)* *Details:* *What and Where:* We are expecting light rain to develop across western MA toward evening, then spreading eastward and mixing with and changing to snow. The snow may become heavy at times for a few hours, with 1 to 2 inch per hour rates and low visibility spreading eastward between 11 PM and 5 AM. Although road surfaces may be relatively warm to start, the heavy rates will cause rapid accumulation on roadways. The snow will mainly fall north of a line from Hartford to Providence to Plymouth. South of that area, mainly rain is expected. The snow will taper to flurries and light rain showers by mid morning Saturday. Expected snow accumulations: - In Massachusetts... 4"-8" in the east slopes of the Berkshires and in Worcester County; 3"-4" west and south of the Boston metro area; 1"-3" in the immediate Springfield metro area and from Boston northward to Cape Ann; 1" or less south coast and Cape Cod. - In Connecticut... 3"-6" in the higher terrain of northwest Hartford County and northeast Tolland and Windham Counties near the MA border; 0-2" in southern Hartford, southern Tolland, and southern Windham Counties, including the immediate Hartford metro area. - In Rhode Island... 2"-5" in northernmost Providence County; 1-3" in central RI, and 0 to 1" in the southern third of RI. *When:* Rain changes over to snow from west to east after 8 PM. Snow becomes heavy at times overnight and becomes light and mixes back with rain Saturday morning. Period of greatest impact is overnight tonight due to heavy wet snow reducing visibility and clinging to power lines. *Impacts:* - Heavy/wet snow may lead to power outages and tree/limb damage [where more than 4 inches of snowfall occurs]. Greatest potential for this includes the east slopes of the Berkshires and northern Worcester County. - Slushy/icy untreated surfaces and secondary roads. *Confidence: *This is now a moderately high confidence forecast. Good morning, Following is an updated weather briefing for a late-season accumulating snowfall expected tonight into Saturday morning across much of interior Southern New England and into eastern MA. *Changes with this update:* - *Winter Weather Advisory Issued for:* - *East Slopes of the Berkshires: *7 PM Tonight to Noon Saturday*.* - *Northern CT, Northern Providence County RI, and western & central MA:* 11 PM Tonight to Noon Saturday. - *Eastern/Northeastern MA (including Boston and the North Shore of MA):* 2 AM to Noon Saturday. *Details:* Light rain will develop across western MA late today, spreading eastward and mixing with/changing to snow tonight. The steadiest of the snow, potentially heavy with low visibility, is expected to fall during the overnight hours from the border of MA and CT/RI on northward towards the Mass Pike and Route 2. Snow wraps up later Saturday morning before turning back over to light rain showers. Mainly rain is expected for the entire event from southeast MA into central/southern RI. *What:* Accumulation of wet/heavy snow. Generally 2 to 4" for northern CT, northwest RI into eastern MA, 4-6" across Worcester County, and 4-6" (locally up to 8") for the Berkshires. *Where:* Most of Massachusetts, northern Connecticut, northwestern Rhode Island. *When:* Rain changes over to snow from west to east after 8 p.m. and continues until late Saturday morning. Period of greatest impact is overnight tonight due to heavy wet snow reducing visibility. Snowfall rates may be at or near 1" per hour in this overnight timeframe. *Impacts:* - Heavy/wet snow may lead to power outages and tree/limb damage [where more than 4 inches of snowfall occurs]. Greatest potential for this includes the terrain in northern Worcester County and across the Berkshires. - Slushy/icy untreated surfaces and secondary roads across higher terrain. *Confidence: *We are most confident in snowfall totals along and north of the Mass Pike and at elevations above 1000 ft. There is some uncertainty with the snowfall totals in northern CT, northwest RI and eastern MA with temperatures being just above freezing and snow mixing with rain at times, and snowfall totals could end up lower than currently forecasted. Good afternoon, We are closing tracking the potential for accumulating snowfall Friday night into Saturday morning. Confidence is not high enough to support any winter weather headlines, but they could be issued in later forecasts. We've attached graphics which include expected snowfall total and the chances of receiving 2 or more inches, and 4 or more inches of snow. *Details:* Light rain will develop across western Massachusetts late in the day Friday with precipitation overspreading Southern New England Friday evening. With cooler air moving south we will slowly change over to snow across Friday night, except across southern Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts where mainly rain is expected. The steadiest of the snow will fall across the border of Massachusetts and Connecticut/Rhode Island, then points north towards the Mass Pike and Route 2. Snow wraps up early Saturday morning before turning back over to light rain showers. *What:* Accumulation of wet/heavy snow. In addition, isolated thunderstorms and heavy downpours are expected. This may lead to some urban flooding potential. *Changes in the latest update:* Decreased maximum wind gusts north and west of Worcester. Otherwise the forecast remains on track. The graphics attached below are the maximum wind gusts expected and the storm total precipitation. *Headlines:* - *High Wind Warning *for all of southern New England except Franklin County Massachusetts until early tonight. - *Wind Advisory* for Franklin County Massachusetts from until early tonight. - *Storm Warning *in effect for the ocean waters into this evening. *Damaging Winds:* - Wind gusts of 55-70 mph out of the south. Period of peak gusts roughly from 3-6 PM. - Highest speeds expected across the South Coast, Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts. *Heavy Rain:* - Storm total rainfall of 1-2 inches. The greatest time of concern is late this morning into early evening. *Changes since the last update:* - Increased emphasis on chance for urban and poor drainage flooding in heavy downpours. Some small streams may approach Action Stage. - Added a Coastal Flood Statement for upper parts of Narragansett Bay including the city of Providence for the low risk of minor coastal flooding during today's mid day high tide *Headlines:* - *High Wind Warning *for all of southern New England except Franklin County Massachusetts from midday until early tonight. - *Wind Advisory* for Franklin County Massachusetts from midday until early tonight. - *Storm Warning *in effect for the ocean waters from this morning into this evening - *Coastal Flood Statement *in effect for upper portions of Narragansett Bay for the mid day high tide *Damaging Winds:* Southerly wind gusts of 55 to 70 mph are possible late this morning through this evening, with sustained winds of 20-40 mph. The highest winds are expected across Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts including Cape Cod and the Islands, but damaging wind gusts are possible across all of southern New England. *Heavy Rain:* Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible from early Monday morning through Monday early Monday night. Isolated amounts up to 3 inches are possible, especially where where any thunderstorms move through. *Thunderstorms**:* There is a low risk of an isolated thunderstorm this afternoon and early tonight, mainly for western CT and MA. Greatest time of concern is late Monday morning into early Monday evening. The highest gusts are expected along the south coast, including Cape Cod and the Islands, but damaging wind gusts are possible across all of southern New England. *Heavy Rain:* Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible from late Sunday night through Monday. Locally higher amounts are possible where any thunderstorms move through. *Thunderstorms:* Thunderstorms will be possible ahead of a cold front Monday afternoon and early Monday night. Difficult travel for high profile vehicles. - Any thunderstorms may bring an increased risk for damaging wind gusts along with cloud to ground lightning. - Heavy rain may cause brief localized urban and poor drainage flooding. *Uncertainty:* - We are confident in strong to damaging wind gusts Monday, but the magnitude of the wind gusts is more uncertain. If we end up on the lower end with mainly 50 to 60 mph wind gusts, we will have scattered power outages. We continue to forecast a strong storm to impact the region on Monday, bringing strong winds and heavy downpours to Southern New England. *Headlines:* No headlines are in effect at this time. It is possible that headlines will be issued later this weekend. *Details:* *Strong to Damaging Winds:* South winds will increase Sunday night. Wind gusts 50 to 60 mph are possible on Monday on Cape Cod and Islands. Wind gusts 40 to 50 mph are possible along the remainder of the coastline, the coastal plain, and higher elevations inland. *Heavy Rain:* Rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is possible from late Sunday night through Monday.
