Good afternoon, We continue to monitor a wintry mix event that is expected to bring a period of snow and sleet changing to freezing rain interior and rain along the coast Wednesday night into early Thursday. Details below. *What has changed:* - A winter weather advisory has been issued for all of Connecticut and the west slopes of the Berkshires for Wednesday night. *WHAT: * - Minor snow and sleet accumulations followed by a period of freezing rain. *WHERE: * - All of southern New England. While most of freezing rain will be confined to the interior, even the immediate coast may experience a period of freezing rain Wednesday night. *WHEN:* - Snow arrives in the Hartford/Springfield areas by 6 pm and will likely impact the latter half of the evening commute. - For the Boston to Providence corridor, the snow will likely begin after the evening commute. - Snow changes to sleet then freezing rain from SW to NE between 10 pm and 4 am, then to rain along the coast. - Precipitation will be ending Thursday morning, but patchy freezing rain/drizzle may linger in the interior and impact the morning commute. Even if the precip has ended, temperatures near and below freezing Thursday morning will likely result in slippery travel, mainly north and west of the Providence to Boston corridor. *POTENTIAL IMPACTS:* *- *The main concern is for icy untreated roads and walkways Wednesday night into the Thursday morning commute. - Ice accretion amounts should be no more than one tenth of an inch so the risk for tree damage and power outages is quite low. *UNCERTAINTY:* - If the timing of the snow speeds up, it could impact the the latter half of the evening commute in the Boston to Providence corridor. - It is possible freezing temperatures could linger during the morning commute for the Boston metro area, but it is much more likely northwest of Boston. Good afternoon everyone, The last of the steady light snow will be exiting the region by late afternoon, but may linger a bit longer across eastern MA. The main issue for the afternoon commute will be for untreated slushy/wet roadways refreezing as temperatures drop. We also have included a brief outline on the likelihood of another wintry mix Wednesday night into Thursday morning. *WHAT: * - Minor snow and sleet accumulations followed by a period of freezing rain. *WHERE: * - All of southern New England and even the immediate coastline may see a period of freezing rain. *WHEN:* - Appears that snow/sleet will arrive after the Wednesday evening commute in the Boston to Providence corridor. However, there is some risk that is may catch part of the evening rush hour in the Hartford/Springfield metro areas. - While the steady precipitation will have come to an end by the Thursday morning commute. Areas of freezing drizzle with temperatures at or below freezing may result in slippery travel. The greatest risk for that is across portions of interior southern New England, but it is also a possibility even in the Boston metro area. *POTENTIAL IMPACTS:* *- *Main concern will be for untreated roads and walkways to be icy Wednesday night into the Thursday morning commute. - Ice accretion amounts look to remain generally under one quarter of an inch. Therefore. the risk for tree damage/power outages is rather low. *UNCERTAINTY:* - It is uncertain whether the snow and sleet impact part of the Wednesday evening commute in the Hartford-Springfield metro areas or hold off until after it is over. - Greatest risk for lingering freezing drizzle during the Thursday morning commute will be across interior southern New England. Good morning everyone, *What has changed:* - No changes to headlines (Warnings & Advisories) - Snow amounts adjusted slightly downward along the south coast of MA/RI and also across northern MA *WHAT: * - A plow-able snowfall *WHERE: * - All of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut *WHEN: * - The steadiest and heaviest snow along with low visibility early this morning will begin to transition to a lighter snow between 6 am to 8 am from west to east - Lighter snows will continue later this morning and afternoon. Visibility will improve from earlier this morning along with hourly snowfall rates decreasing. *POTENTIAL IMPACTS:* - Snow covered roads along with reduced visibility will result in poor driving conditions (although a lighter morning commute given the holiday will help) particularly along and south of the MA turnpike into CT and RI . - Given the lighter snowfall rates later this morning and into the afternoon along with increasing visibility will result in improving driving conditions *UNCERTAINTY:* - Mixed wintry precipitation along the south coast this morning may drift northward into the Greater Providence to Plymouth corridor. This may hold down snow accumulations in this area - Low risk of patchy freezing drizzle southern RI/MA later this morning and afternoon - Confident that snow intensity will decrease between 6 am and 8 am from west to east this morning followed by lighter and more intermittent snow later this morning and afternoon - there is a low risk for a few moderate snow bands this afternoon that could briefly lower visibility along with roads becoming snow covered again. We have included a brief outline in this email and attached the latest snowfall forecast along with the approximate start and end times. *What has changed:* - Winter Storm Warnings Issued for northern Rhode Island into portions of southeast MA approaching the Cape Cod Canal. 4 to 7 inches of snow expected. - Winter Weather Advisories expanded to include the rest of southern New England for a general 3 to 6 inches of snow. *WHAT: * - A plow-able snowfall is in store for the region. *WHERE: * - All of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut *WHEN: * - Snow is expected to overspread the region from southwest to northeast between 9 pm and 2 am Monday morning. - The heaviest snow will fall after midnight through about 9 am Monday morning near and especially south of the Massachusetts turnpike. - Lighter snows will continue later Monday morning and afternoon, but bands of heavier snow will impact central and eastern Massachusetts at times. *POTENTIAL IMPACTS:* - Roads will become snow covered/slippery along with reduced visibility for the Monday morning commute particularly near and especially south of the MA turnpike (although more limited given the Holiday). - Greatest risk for snow and slippery roads during the Monday afternoon/early evening commute will be across central and eastern MA, where the ending time will be the latest. *UNCERTAINTY:* - High confidence in a general 3 to 7 inches of snow across the region. Greatest risk for higher amounts will be across portions of RI into southeast MA. - If the low tracks further south amounts will be on the lower end of those numbers, while if it ends up a bit further north snow amounts will be on the higher end. - Snow amounts on the immediate south coast, Cape and Islands are subject to change by a few inches dependent on how far north the rain/sleet line gets into the region. Here are the details including graphics regarding snowfall projections (Most Likely, Low end & High end amounts including start times), headlines and a model simulated radar loop beginning 10 pm tonight thru 7 am Monday. *What has changed:* - Winter Storm Watches have been issued for the potential for 6+ inches of snow across southeast Massachusetts and all of Rhode Island - Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for expected snowfall of 2-4" for much of MA along and south of the Turnpike including the Greater Boston area and all of northern CT *WHAT: * - Plow-able snowfall expected *WHERE: * - All of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut *WHEN: * - Snow is expected to overspread the region from southwest to northeast between 9 pm tonight and 1 am Monday - The steadiest and heaviest snow will fall after midnight into Monday morning. - The focus for accumulating snow will likely shift to eastern MA by Monday afternoon. Snow should wind down from west to east later Monday afternoon into early evening. *POTENTIAL IMPACTS:* - Roads will become snow covered/slippery along with reduced visibility for the Monday morning commute (although more limited given the Holiday). Also, attached is our latest snowfall forecast as well as approximate start and end times. *WHAT: * - Accumulating snow expected. *WHERE: * - All of southern New England. *WHEN: * - Snow is expected to overspread the region from southwest to northeast between 9 pm and 3 am Monday morning. The highest risk for a couple inches of snow accumulation by daybreak Monday will be south of the MA turnpike and especially near the south coast. - The focus for accumulating snow will likely shift to central and eastern MA by Monday afternoon. Snow should wind down from west to east later Monday afternoon into early evening. *POTENTIAL IMPACTS:* - Roads may be snow covered/slippery along with reduced visibility for the Monday morning commute (although more limited given the Holiday). Highest risk will be south of the MA turnpike and especially near the south coast. - Greatest risk for snow and slippery roads during the Monday afternoon/early evening commute will be across central and eastern MA, where the ending time will be the latest. *UNCERTAINTY:* - Latest guidance suggests that 2 to 4 inches of snow appears reasonable for much of the region. Good morning everyone, There is a low to moderate risk of accumulating snow Sunday night into Monday. Here are the details ... *What / Where / When ... * Snow, mainly light is expected Sunday night into Monday across all of MA, RI and CT. *Uncertainty ...* Current indications is for mainly light snow as this weather system weakens as it tracks across the region. The most likely scenario is for snow accumulations to range from a coating to two inches. If the system weakens more rapidly then expected less snow is possible. Conversely, if the system weakens slower as it approaches the region more snow is possible. Three graphics are attached to illustrate these different possible scenarios. This event is still more than 48 hrs away, so changes to the forecast are likely. Thus stay tuned to these updated email weather briefings. *Impacts ... * Despite minor snow accumulations expected, roads may still become snow covered late Sunday night into Monday resulting in slippery travel. With Monday a holiday travel volume may be less than normal, possibly reducing travel impacts. Nevertheless, it doesn't take much snow for slippery travel to develop.
