Good morning, We continue to forecast a wintry mess, especially for the Tuesday afternoon into evening commute to which we expect a considerable, potentially high impact. Please see the attached slides detailing amounts and timing of anticipated threats, while details concerning impacts and uncertainty are provided below. *What has changed ...* - *WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES* issued for Northern Connecticut from 7 am Tuesday to 7 am Wednesday. *WINTER STORM WATCH* continues for all of Massachusetts but southeastern areas including Cape Cod and the Islands. - *GALE WATCHES* issued for the outer waters of Southern New England late afternoon Tuesday into early morning Wednesday *What / Where / When ...* - Onset snow transitioning to a wintry mix of mostly sleet to freezing rain across interior Southern New England, while along the coast, transitioning to sleet before mixing with and changing over to rain. - Beginning around noon Tuesday, ending early- to mid-morning Wednesday. - Biggest concern are the impacts for the Tuesday afternoon into evening commute. - Hazardous travel conditions with slick roadways, especially if left untreated. Reductions in visibility with any snow and / or sleet. - Potential for snowfall rates of around 1" / hour for a brief period before mixing with sleet. - Less impact to the Wednesday AM commute, however can't rule out some lingering icy roadways across interior MA & CT. *Uncertainty ...* - Continued challenges in exact transition timing of precipitation types for any one particular location, as well as subsequent outcomes & impacts (i.e., should the transition to rain occur sooner than forecast). - Snow and ice amounts could differ depending how fast warm air moves in Tuesday evening into Tuesday night. Good afternoon, Little has changed from the previous forecast, but we have issued Winter Storm Watches for western, central, and parts of eastern Massachusetts. Please note, the timing of precip type graphic is an animation. *New Headlines ...* - *WINTER STORM WATCH* issued for western, central, and parts of eastern Massachusetts from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday morning. *What / Where / When ... * - Onset snow transitioning to a wintry mix of mostly sleet with some freezing rain across interior Southern New England, transitioning to rain along the coast late Tuesday night. - Beginning Tuesday afternoon, ending by early to mid-morning Wednesday. - Biggest concern are the impacts for the Tuesday afternoon into evening commute. - Hazardous travel conditions on roads, especially untreated surfaces, and reductions in visibility as a result of potential high snowfall rates. *Uncertainty ... * - Still some uncertainty with timing, best scenario would be a later onset of snowfall across eastern Massachusetts until after the evening commute. The rest of the region looks to be impacted regardless. - Potential for snowfall rates of 1-2" an hour during the evening commute. - Snow and ice amounts could differ across the interior depending on how fast warm air moves in overnight. - Wednesday morning commute should be okay for the majority of the region, but there could still be some lingering icy spots across the interior. Good morning, Initial snows transitioning to a wintry mix of mostly sleet with some freezing rain across the interior, while transitioning to rain along the coast, is forecast for midday Tuesday through early Wednesday morning. Please note, the timing of precip type graphic is an animation. *What / Where / When ... * - Onset snow transitioning to a wintry mix of mostly sleet with some freezing rain across interior Southern New England, transitioning to rain along the coast. - Beginning late morning to midday Tuesday, continuing through early Wednesday morning. - Biggest concern is impacts for the Tuesday afternoon into evening commute, perhaps lingering into the Wednesday morning commute. Travel headaches with untreated surfaces becoming slick ... reductions in visibility as a result of snow. *Uncertainty ... * - A first guess storm total snow and storm total ice graphic are attached, as well as a rough timing of winter weather outcomes. - However, the forecast beyond 48 hours, there is still some uncertainty as to specific outcomes and impacts for any particular location, especially with regards to transition timing of precipitation-types. - While widespread advisory-level impacts are forecast for most of Southern New England presently, with the threat of warning-level impacts for N/W areas of MA, the latest suite of forecast guidance has trended warmer. - If this warm trend continues, then impacts could be potentially less for particular areas. - Thus no headlines were issued with this latest forecast given uncertainty and lower forecast confidence. Accumulating Snow And/Or Sleet Likely To Have A Significant Impact For The Tuesday PM Commute

Good afternoon everyone. We have attached a graphic to this email and also included a brief outline below. The main concern is for accumulating snow and/or sleet to have a significant impact on the Tuesday afternoon and evening commute. *WHAT: * - Accumulating snow and sleet along with the potential for a period of freezing rain. *WHERE: * - All of southern New England with the greatest risk for the higher amounts of snow/sleet north of the Massachusetts turnpike. The threat for freezing rain will be across interior southern New England. *WHEN: * - Appears that the snow and sleet will arrive after the Tuesday morning commute, but a significant impact appears likely for the Tuesday afternoon and evening commute across most of the region. - The snow and sleet will likely change to rain late Tuesday night across eastern MA/RI, but a wintry mix including the potential for some freezing rain will continue across portions of interior Massachusetts and perhaps northern Connecticut. - An impact to the Wednesday morning commute is possible across portions of interior southern New England before all precipitation comes to an end. *IMPACTS:* - Snow and sleet covered roadways expected to impact the Tuesday afternoon and evening commute in most locations with temperatures in the 20s. - The Wednesday morning commute may remain hazardous across portions of interior southern New England. - Potential ice accretion across interior southern New England should be generally less than a quarter of an inch, so the threat for tree damage/power outages is low. *UNCERTAINTY:* - This storm is still 3 days out so uncertainty remains. - Snow accumulations remain uncertain, dependent upon when snow changes to sleet. Greatest risk for higher snow accumulations will be north of the Massachusetts turnpike. - Regardless of snow accumulations, temperatures are likely to be in the 20s during the Tuesday afternoon and evening commute. This will likely result in hazardous travel. - While snow and sleet should change to rain across most of eastern MA and RI late Tuesday night, a wintry mix including the potential for some freezing rain will remain possible across interior southern New England and perhaps impact the Wed am commute. Good afternoon everyone, The primary issue in the near term remains the strong to damaging winds across the region tonight into Saturday: - Wind Advisories continue for all of Southern New England through Saturday afternoon. - Sustained W-NW winds of 20-30 mph with gusts as high as 50 mph are expected. - Strongest winds will be experienced in the higher terrain, the Berkshires/Litchfield Hills, Worcester Hills, as well as along the E MA shorelines. - Expecting the strongest gusts around daybreak into mid morning Saturday. - Scattered tree and branch damage expected along with a risk for power outages. For Mariners, Gale Warnings continue with gusts 45-50 kt and offshore seas around 10ft. Note that the included images are only regarding these winds, not the storm discussed below. We are also monitoring a mixed precipitation winter storm for Tuesday into early Wednesday. Note that there is still some uncertainty, but here are a few things we are watching for: - Starting as a period of at least moderate snowfall around mid day Tuesday. - Gradual change to a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain from south to north during the late afternoon and evening hours Tuesday. - Some locations across the interior may remain all snow for the whole duration. - The Tuesday afternoon commute will be the most impacted, with the storm ending during the Wednesday morning commute. With recent rains/wet soils, the prolonged period of strong winds may exacerbate the risk for impacts. *What:* - W-NW Sustained winds 20-30 mph. - Wind gusts up to 40-50 mph at times. *When:* - Winds Friday 15-20 mph with gusts to around 40 mph at times. - The strongest winds mentioned above mainly Friday night into early Saturday.. *Where:* - All of Southern New England will likely experience these winds. *Impacts:* - Winds of this magnitude may lead to downed trees/limbs. - Some scattered power outages possible. A mainly freezing rain event with some sleet mixed-in will develop around 6 to 9 pm this evening, west to east, continuing through Thursday morning before tapering off, transitioning to drizzle into midday Thursday.* WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES* continue. Forecast ice accretion amounts are attached. *Greatest concern ...* - Icing during the Thursday AM commute, especially across interior areas of Southern New England away from the immediate coast. - With any icing, untreated roads will become slick resulting in hazardous travel conditions. - In addition, there's a low risk of downed limbs due to the weight of ice with the potential for isolated power outages. *Uncertainty ... * - Still unclear as to the southern extent of freezing rain impacts. It is entirely possible that locations across southern Rhode Island and southeast coastal Massachusetts (southern Bristol and southern Plymouth Counties), including the upper Cape, could see a brief period of freezing rain this evening, before transitioning to rain around midnight. - Southern coastline communities mentioned above are encouraged to stay tuned to future forecasts which will be issued no later than 4 pm today.
